Drove down to Port Campbell through lush pine forests and undulating landscape. not how I imagined Australia, more like Scottish Highlands. This part of the GOR is where the limestone cliffs are being eroded by the force of the waves into spectacular stacks that stand out from the coastline. The 'twelve apostles' are near here and as they are a famous tourist attraction many coaches of Japanese camera clickers abound. I preferred Loch Ard Gorge, the site of the wrecking of The Loch Ard, a ship which sailed from Gravesend in 1878. The passengers and crew held a party to celebrate their safe arrival in Australia; a little prematurely as it broke up in a storm 24 hours later before reaching Melbourne. Of the 54 passengers and crew, only 2 survived. The limestone stacks that caused the sinking are huge and strong currents wash around them.
