Our private bay invaded by tourist boats, we headed across the water to the small Lycian city of Simena ( now called Kalekoy), which has been inhabited since 4BC! Various civilisations have made the most of the buildings hewn from rock - recycling. Part if the city is under water, with the odd stone coffin (sarcophagi) and bits of buildings creating navigation hazards for boats.
The Fort, positioned with 360 degree views, gave prospective marauding invaders no chance of a surprise arrival - sounds more glamorous than
a tourist lookout.
The locals are friendly, and persistent traders!
Restaurants on the water, just one beautifully renovated home - with a giant sarcophagus in the backyard. The ruins include a cistern, whopping stone pots the size of rainwater tanks,
and some Lycian graffiti.
Next stop Kas, to refuel wine stocks. Whites depleted, reds on offer not getting many takers! Our Captain, Genghis, did an impressive job parking the boat in a full marina. Manouvering something the size of a block of flats not easy!
An hour ashore, time to check out good leather knock off shops, beautiful Turkish fine cotton, nice stirling silver. The wee supermarket, started by the owner's grandfather had a wine section filed under toilet paper and next to toothpaste. Oh and razor blades filed next to biscuits.
Once restocked sailed straight to
Kastellorizo, Greece to moor for the night.
Time for an explore, then our first night off the boat to eat. Excellent tzatziki, shrimp and salad followed by goat, chicken, lamb chops from NZ, moussaka (looked like tiramisu) or fish, accompanied by rice and fat home made chips, all accompanied by our new stocks of BYO wine.
The restaurant owner looked after us, along with his bleached blonde Russian bride, aged guessed at 60. Hmmmm, interesting.
