After an early breakfast at 7.00, Sheila and I were met at the hotel by a car which took us 10 minutes down the road to the ranch, where we met our guide. And our horses for the trek. My horse was an Apaloosa called Jose , he was around 16 hands. After mounting, our guide took us for a beautiful and informative ride through typical Belizian farmland, telling us about the various trees, plants and birds which we encountered along the way and their holistic uses. After around an hour and a half we reached the town, and from there had to cross the small river in the horses using a hand cranked ferry. From there we rode for another mile before reaching the ancient Mayan ruins site of Xunantunich. Here Sheila and I dismounted and left the horses with our guide, and had an hour to look round the site for an hour, and climbing the main temple to look at the view. After around an hour , we made our way back to the guide and horses, in order to make the rerun journey. However this time, the majority of the trail was spent meandering along the shady river bank, (as by this time it was 33 degrees), before meeting the trail we had taken previously, taking us back to the ranch.
After waiting around 20 minutes in the shade, the car returned to take us back to the hotel. The remainder of the afternoon was spent relaxing by the pool and taking a siesta in my room. We met at 7.00pm for dinner before retiring early to bed at 9.30.
