The Ellora and Ajanta caves in Aurangabad were amazing! They are Buddhist caves that once housed hundred of monks and villagers. They are as old as places like Angkor Wat in Cambodia and very beautiful. Luckily for me, you are still allowed to go in an explore the caves up close! In some places you can even see the paintings that were done in BC and up to about 1000 AD. They are still colourful and everything! Protected from the weather, they have maintained their detail and colour and fortunately have not fallen victim to vandals and grafitti artists... yet. I am struck again, as I was in Cambodia, as to what a privilege it is to be able to enter and explore these areas. I cannot think of anywhere in the Western world where you would be allowed hands on access to treasures like this. One more in my collection of World Heritage sites on this trip! Very cool, indeed. Again with similarities to Angkor Wat, you have both Buddhist and Hindu images in the same temple complex. Such a beautiful testament to the fact that different faiths need not destroy one another. They can exist and, in fact, inhabit the same temples and not have any problem. Perhaps, also, it may be because in India they believe Buddha to be the 9th incarnation of Vishnu, a very prominent Hindu God.
