OK. I'm now in Perth and working again. It's been a while since I wrote anything so here goes. I was working in a place called Robinvale from Jan til March, which was a tiny place but good fun. My job was on the trucks - going round to all the farms and loading the pallets of fruit on to the truck and then taking them back to the yard before they were sent to one of the cities. I was doing long weeks and making good money, but the hostel was a dive. Because half of it was a pub, it was full of simple locals and very drunk aborigines and they did not really like the backpackers, so that was a bit awkward. It was a funny place and the people I worked for were Italian so they thought they were Mafia! Anyway, there were lots of good times there and I arranged to buy a van with some lads I met there, 2 from Manchester and a scouser.
We left Robinvale and headed down to Melbourne for Paddy's weekend along with about 20 others and had a really good weekend. We all stayed in a dorm and had a lot of daft moments. I also went to see the Grand Prix, which was alright, but it was a bit too hot really and it's too loud and you can't see anything, but still worth seeing and good to walk round the track. I bumped into a few people I worked with from Computereshare back when I lived in Melbourne and it was good to catch up with them.
After that we set off on the long road trip to Perth with a couple of tents, a gas stove and a map of Australia! We travelled along the Ocean Road - it was better weather than when I'd done it last time, but it still rained a bit. This time I saw a lot more and we camped along the way at many great locations as well as some odd ones.
One place was a rodeo station, with lots of skulls pinned up! We took our time and eventually arrived in Adelaide. However, we did not stop for long as we were staying in a camp site out of the city. Then we headed to the Nularbor Plain and the long straight road across the desert. It was very hot & sweaty, with not much to look at but really good fun - worth doing, although it's a bit upsetting seeing all the dead kangaroos along the way. We stopped off at a place called Cook, which has a total of 4 residents living there! Camping and cooking along the way was great and we lived on hot dogs for 5 days! Not many tourist attractions on the way, but a lot of wilderness!
We stopped in Kalgoorlie and sold the campervan and got a decent amount back for it. The main cost had been the petrol, so the journey had cost a bit, but worth it for the laughs.
We hopped on the Indian Pacific train and did the last bit on the famous train, eventually arriving in Perth! We also stayed in Fremantle for a few days, which was nice and then moved to the city - into the YMCA, which was like Nelson Mandela House and smelt awful. Now I'm in a new hostel and working in a club! It's like being back in Greece and stays open every night till 5! So I'm now having fun in Perth - I think I'll be here for about another month and then see what happens!
