As I start writing this final blog I am several thousand feet in the air on an Easyjet A320 bound for London Gatwick.
The journey is now almost complete, all that is left are a taxi back to my Aunties driveway in Copthorne and then the short ride back to Worthing.
Well, as last days go it has been quite a pleasant day, well as pleasant as possible given the thought that we would soon be heading home and something that is never far from your mind.
Today was spent mainly by the pool making the most of the time we had left to relax. First things first and we got our belongings ready and packed, and the accommodation left as tidy as possible.
Funnily enough the chap came back to fix the air conditioning unit this morning. He seemed to get it working again, but how long it will last is anyones guess, and it's too late for us now anyway.
The morning was quickly disappearing as we spent our last few hours by the pool, taking a few last photographs and dipping in and out of the pool to cool off. Madalyn has loved the pool and it's probably fair to say she has spent as much time under water as she has above the water line, I think if it was possible to be a real life mermaid she would grab the opportunity to do so with both hands.
Lunch today was from the pool bar , they do huge panini's for only 3.50€, so big in fact that only one of us managed to eat the whole thing. Good value and nice food.
By mid afternoon we were back at the apartment having waved a sad farewell to the pool. Showered and packed up we awaited the vacation inspection when a chap would we were told, arrive at 4pm to check it over.
Once again and in true Sardinian style nobody arrived at 4pm and by 4.15pm we left the apartment and left the keys with the barman. I wasn't quite sure whether the barman was understanding what I was explaining as his English was about as impressive as my Italian i.e. pretty much non existent.
Anyway i handed him the keys along with one of our business cards so he new our name (which I think only served to confuse the matter even more, in fact) and asked him to pass the keys to Frederico - this he seemed to understand, and as we have heard nothing more I assume he must have got the keys.
Frederico has been really helpful and is a genuinely nice chap so we asked him for a photo which we took by the pool earlier in the day,
By 4.15 we were on our way to Olbia airport in our hire car, this is located on the north east of the island and in Sardinia terms looks to be quite a large town, the airport being located just to the south of Olbia.
The journey in our hire car from Vignola Mare (accommodation) to Olbia took around one hour thirty minutes and was very scenic in parts with plenty of tight winding roads to negotiate along the way. We had not been on these roads before so it was nice to see some of the mountainous landscape.
By 6pm we had reached the airport and dropped the car back at Scissily by car all in tact although unbelievably we very nearly scraped it on a low wall literally as you drive into where their hire cars are parked.
Check in opened at 6.50 and as it was only around 6.15 we grabbed a bite to eat at one of the seriously overpriced outlets at the airport - this is what you call pricing to a captive audience! Food average too but our expectations were not great.
Come 7pm we had checked in our luggage at the Eaayjet baggage drip off point and hoped that we would see ALL of our luggage appear at the Gatwick baggage reclaim point.
A few duty free purchases were made and it was soon time to board the 2 hour flight back to the UK. As much as I enjoy flying at this point in the proceedings I always wish I could beam myself up rather like Scotty from Star Trek and be back at home in the comfort of my living room with a nice cup of tea.
The flight was around 30 minutes late leaving but made up good time in flight so we were only around 10 minutes late of the flights official arrival time. There were a few pockets of turbulence along the way but nothing of any significance to worry about.
I must admit it is always good to be back on British soil despite knowing the holiday is over.
Thankfully all our luggage arrived this time so I called the taxi driver who had driven us to the airport some 16 days ago...only to find he was unavailable which was a bit of a pain because A) he was cheap and B) it would have made things a bit easier.
Anyway he gave us another firm to call and we were soon back at my Aunties House. Janice came our bless her with our car keys which considering it was Now around 11.30 was quite impressive. I handed her the chocolates we has bought for her earlier at the airport as a Thank you for letting us use her driveway which saved us a considerable amount of money on airport parking.
So, the very last part of the trip was upon us, the drive back to our house where our brings our brilliant adventure to a close. As it turned out we made it into day 17 as we finally arrived home after midnight.
I will post some interesting stats to the end of this blog...and we look forward to our next adventure where and whenever that will be, it's fair to say that these amazing 16 days will be hard to beat, but we'll try our best.
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and I hope you have found it enjoyable and entertaining in parts.
