Gone walkabout
Hello me Hearties,
Currently in the Mekong Delta area now and heading off to the Cambodian border this afternoon. Hoi An was a real shopper's paradise - over 200 tailors!! We had some clothes made v cheaply. After that, we headed down to Nha Trang - a beachy resort, had lobster and crabs on the beach for about 3 quid per person!! One evening in the bar, it rained so hard, the waters rose up to our knees so we were trapped but then eventually we had to wade through the river back to our hotel. Went down to the next place called Da Lat - a mountain retreat where the weather was wonderfully temperate. then to Saigon (HCMC) and now in the Mekong delta. We stayed in Can Tho and last night on Tiger Island with a small family. No tigers any more though - but did see some more monkeys.
Much of the last three days has been spent visiting floating markets, floating houses, floating fisheries or anything else that might float. Its really busy here but few farangs come to this part of the world so you are treated as a bit of a celebrity. you kind of feel like Rocky when they all come running down the road shouting and waving.
Also have spent a lot of time sitting on wooded benches, stools etc so looking forward to a padded bus journey, hopefully with aircon.
Have just heard about the Football and Rugby scores, sounds like i missed a good weekend of sport, not often we get one over on the Aussies and Argies in the same weekend. Me and rachel were getting our asses kicked at the memory card game by a 10 year old kid. It was like playing rain man. After i showed him my only 2 card tricks he bacame my friend and was either in awe or scared and started to help me.
Dalat was really good, we took a motorbike tour with some local guides. All were really interesting and had loads of war tales and other stories they were happy to tell. 2 of them were in the infantry for the south but seemed to have come out of it with a good sense of humour.
In Saigon we visited and went down some of the famed Viet Cong tunnels in Cu Chi before visiting the American War Crimes Museum. Needless to say the yanks are not the states favourite but the people here seem to love everyone.
Being here on the delta I have found a suitable place to supply my old fishing boat fetish, (which i did not realise i had til i looked through some of my shots) so, loads more photos of boats, people fishing and fishing nets to come. Somone send my site to John Wilson, I could teach him a thing or two now.
OK must dash, I think I have to go and sweat somewhere else now.
