We had great expectations for Monkey Mia. We had heard it was beautiful and that the dolphin interactions were amazing.
To begin our stay here we had to pay the entry fee to the 'park' and for our stay at the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort. It was very pricey but the site we had was really nice. It was close to the beach, drinking water tap and the amentities. You might not think that being close to the water or amenities is important, but it makes life MUCH easier. The amenities were all done up so that was another bonus.
The beach at Monkey Mia didn't dissapoint! We could take Charli down there with us with was nice so we could walk along the beach and have a swim without locking her in the van! As this place was a resort, there was a shop (which was tres $$), a bar/cafe and restaurant. We enjoyed sitting outside at the restaurant with Charli next to us and watching the world go by. The view was lovely with the aqua water and white sands of the beach.
It was very windy at Monkey Mia which was very annoying! Everything blew away and it was just so noisy, but oh well, can't help that! There was also a resident Emu which we first thought was AWESOME! This was until it attacked Charli not once, but twice!! We couldn't relax while sitting outside the van as we contiunuously had to keep an eye out for the damn Emu!! Charli played a game of cat and mouse with the Emu and came off 2nd best when the Emu stomped on her! Eek! Although it was funny to watch, we were lucky Charli didn't get hurt my the Emu's big claw. This pest of an animal walks through the cafe and steals peoples food off their plates. It walks around the park constantly and even pops its head into peoples vans/cars/campers/tents looking for food! I heard that it chased a couple and their dog into the ocean!! So we weren't so keen on that animal.
We were excited to see the dolphins so we rose early one morning to set off down to the beach to check it out! There were about 60 people...and one dolphin. The volunteers chose people to feed the dolphin...4 people, so obviously we didn't get chosen. But we didn't mind. We sat in the sun on the pier and watched it all from above. It was nice to see all the little kids being chosen and freaking out when the dolphin moved. hehe they loved it!!
One of our favourite nights was when we took the bottle of French champagne, that Carl bought us for Christmas, down to the beach and polished it off while the sun was setting! What a perfect evening (except for the wind) and the champagne was delicious!! Thanks Carl!!
We headed into Denham on Cup Day to find that almost everything was closed! They don't work on Melbourne Cup day! So strange. So we enjoyed a coffee and cake at the bakery, sent some postcards and had a walk on the jetty. The water here was different to the aqua water at Monkey Mia...the water here was like a jade green!! Was so nice! But again, not very inviting as the wind was blowing so hard! boo!
Monkey Mia was a definate experience and I would go back again, but maybe as a family so the kids could see the dolphins. I still think that there are better places out there than Monkey Mia with its killer Emu, but the beaches and sunsets were amazing!
