A couple of Days after the Basket ball (See Cairns City Post) I had organised a trip on a yaht to the Great Barrier Reef to do soe diving (See photos under "Great Barrier Reef" Album).
I had to arrive at the docks at 7:30 am and borded a beautiful large yaht with about 50 other people. The plan was to sail out to the Reef (About a 2 and a half hour trip directly east) and then ancor off a small reef where we could Snorkel and Dive for about 2 and a half hours.
Unfortunately because of the type of Chemo Drugs I had earlier in the year I am not allowed to have Oxygen out of a tank for the next 5 years , so I was not allowed to Dive, but the snorkeling was amazing. (There's even a video in the Video section of this site)
There was a large variety of fish and I could snorkle right up to them with my camera (Which I had ought a special case that allowed me to take the camera underwater without destroying it).
Unfortunately even though it was a beautiful sunny day the colour of the pictures taken were all a bluey / green which is very diffrent to the way they looked at the time.
After an exhausting 2 hours snorkeling it was time to get back on the yaht and move on to the next dive location called "Michaelmas Cay" this was also another reef we could snorkel and explore but was right next to a small strip of Sand and bushes that 1000's of birds nested on.
On the way to "Michaelmas Cay" we had some lunch which consisted of Prawns and Pasta, and chatted with each other about how amazing the trip had been so far.
The reef here was just as beautiful as the first but it was at this second reef I saw some GIANT Clams the size of large suitcases with an irradesant prurple/blue colouring on the fleshy part of the clams. They closed shut suddenly when I was brave enough to snorkle down and touch the outside of their shells.
After another 2 hours it was time to get back on the boat where one of the crew fed some of the Large fish we had been watching under the water. They were the size of dinner plates and fought over the scrapes of food that the crew through overboard.(The video of this in the video section is pretty cool)
We finnaly arrived back in port in Cairns around 5:30pm and I headed back to DreamTime backpackers and Caught up with Nadine the German Backpacker.
Nadine suggested that she was going to hire a car and go up to "Cape Tribulation" (about 3 hours north of Cairns) and was going to see if anyone wanted to share the cost of the car with her.
I told her Id love to go, and we thought the other German Backpacker I had met "Jullian" would also like to join us.
Pretty soon we had a Full Car, with Nadine, Myself, Jullian and another German girl "Enya" also sharing the trip with us.
More about the Trip to Cape Tribulation" in the next post.
