We arrived here mid afternoon on Saturday, on a ferry from Townsville. The weather seemed better than it had been for a while, although very humid indeed and when we got to our dorm we realized that we were in for some hot, sticky nights as there were too many people per dorm and no air con!!
We spent the first afternoon in the pool trying to cool off although the pool was warm too it was still really refreshing. We met Liz and Hanna who had been on our Whitsunday sailing trip and had a few drinks with them at the bar and planned the next day. The Island is pretty quiet and relaxing, exactly what Sarah and me wanted after the hecticness we have had in the past few weeks. We had been expecting the hostel to be all party, party, party but it was actually very quiet and chilled out in the bar area in the evening, the sunset from the hostel bar was really stunning!I think the hostel gets really lively for Full Moon which unfortunately we will miss as it is next Friday.
Sunday we were up early and split the cost of renting a Mini-Moke with Liz and Hanna and headed straight off to a wildlife sanctuary on the other side of the Island. The Island is so small it only took about 10 minutes to get to the other side!At the Wildlife Sanctuary we started off by holding a baby saltwater crocodile which was cool, she had her mouth taped up to stop people sticking their fingers in her mouth! We then to see some birds, Sarah didn't like them very much but I thought they were great and even fed one by putting a pumpkin seed in my mouth!
Next we looked at lots of different types of lizards, in particular the blue tongued lizard which looks quite like a snake with legs!By this time Sarah was getting excited as we neared the Koalas, she has always wanted to cuddle one and this was her chance!I however think they are pretty boring as all the do is sleep, eat and mate (actually maybe its not all bad - I could do that!!) So Sarah got to have her picture taken cuddling a Koala, they were actually quite cute!
I also got to do something I have wanted to for ages and licked a big green ants bottom! Not as crazy as it might sound they taste of lime, fills your whole mouth with the taste, its just tricky trying not to be bitten by them! And talking of bites, Sarah is now covered with over 100 bites all over her body, the bed bug bites are starting to go down but she now has mosquito and ant bites to add to the collection, some of them are really nasty and have come up in blisters on her feet - poor girl!I'm ok though!!
Back to the wildlife sanctuary, the last think we held was a carpet python which was quite cool, Sarah was a bit nervous, we even got to see it poo on the floor - nice!
The afternoon we spent driving to the two main Bays on the Island, Horseshoe Bay and Picnic Bay where we swam in the sea and lazed under palm trees. When it cooled off we went for a walk up to the Forts, which were used during WWII to look for ships on the horizon protecting Townsville. The gun was accurate to 20 km, although was never fired in anger. This bush walk was also a good opportunity to see the wildlife on the Island.I spotted a wild Koala and Sarah spotted a wild Rock Wallaby, we were pleased! The sunset from up there was beautiful and I got some great pictures. We dropped the Moke off in the dark and tried to find somewhere for dinner, it was 8pm and nothing was open (not that there was much to choose from anyway!)It really is a small Island, so all we could do was have a few drinks in the bar and go to bed, but we had had a lovely day and the weather was fantastic!
Monday our last day on the Island we lazed around by and in the pool all day, we had met a few other couples so we had others to chat to as we were being generally lazy! The evening was spent playing games with the people we had met here and a few others we have kept bumping into on our travels through Oz, especially Dave, the American guy who was on our Fraser Island tour!
Next it is on to Cairns to see Debbie and Grant, the guys we met on the Inca Trail in Peru, it will be really good to see them again.
Keep in Touch
Love A&Sxxx
