Another few days have whizzed by with us hardly noticing, time goes so quickly when you are enjoying yourself!!
Sarah did enjoy watching the tango on Tuesday night, they were incredibly talented - i much preferred my steak. I am pleased to report that the promises of steaks the sizes of bricks have been fulfilled - we will be dining very well in Argentina.
On Wednesday we ventured onto the metro for the first time, it seemed to be very efficient and you can go nearly anywhere in town for the princely sum of 70centavos (11p)!! Firstly we went to see their Big Ben lookalike (Torre de los Ingleses), however, apart from the clockface it bears no resemblence whatsoever! After that we needed to go shopping - i did tell Sarah that it was going to be cold here before we left, but she obviously fancied a shopping trip instead! Whilst trapsing around, avoiding all the cheap leather goods sellers we stumbled upon a shopping centre - this place was completely exuberant, expensive designer clothes aplenty, completely out of our price range - and we were thinking that all Argentines were poor!!
Yesterday we went to the Recoleta Cemetary, a huge walled complex housing the mausoleums of rich deceased Argetines - including the grave of Eva Duarte (Evita). This place was very eerie, some of the mausoleums were the size of small houses, possibly one of the strangest places I have ever been to. We followed this with a walk to the Evita museum via a piece of modern art called the Floralis Generica Monument - a 15m high stainless steel flower head! I wasn't expecting much from the Evita museum, but it was excellent - a truly remarkable woman, that achieved so much in such a short life. It also opened my eyes to how rich argentina must have been during and just after WWII - the social reforms she managed to bring in at such times must have cost the nation a small fortune. A trip to the zoo rounded the day off nicely, although some of the animals were not kept in the best of condition, although the sheep made us feel right back at home.
Today we went to La Boca, home of Boca Juniors who last week won the copa libertadores (South America's champions league) the most famous and successful Argentine side. We went on a tour of the 56,000 capacity stadium, it seemed tiny, the stands are incredibly close to the pitch with terracing behind both goals. On a home game they only allow 3,000 away fans in, so you can only imagine what the atmosphere must be like - and how imposing it must be for the away team to come out to. After some cafe con leche and medialunas (croissants) which i am slowly becoming addicted to, we went to Caminito, a street of brightly painted houses - they were originally painted with spare paint from the ships.
We are off to seek out the famed nightlife tonight, although apparently noone goes out 'til 2am, we shall see how long we last!!
We will photos of BsAs up as soon as we find a computer that has some bandwidth!!
Off to get ready now, love to all A&S xxx
