The bus journey to El Chalten was only 4 hours, when we got there it was really cold but also really sunny so the first thing I did was get my sunglasses out the bag (every opportunity) then proceded to freeze and get wet on the walk to the hostel as I hadn't thought further than the sunglasses and left my coat in the bag even though it was raining and blowing a gale! Some (Casson) might say I had my priorities wrong but I know they're right :-)
Even though it was raining we decided to poncho up and walk to the waterfall just outside of town, it was as I was walking along getting funny looks from people that I realised we were in a pretty serious walking place, everyone was North Faced up and there I was in my bright pink poncho with a unicorn on the front with "i believe" plastred across it!!!!! Note to self, I was apparently not appropriately dressed again.
The next day we wrapped up as it was a pretty cold but bright day and headed up the trail to Cerro Fitz Roy, it was a really nice walk, amazing scenery and not too difficult, that was until we got to the last hour when it was a steep climb for over an hour! On the way we stopped at a Mirador (viewing point) and the peaks of Fitz Roy were covered in cloud but about 5 minutes later they cleared and we had an amazing view.
As we got to the top it got colder and colder but it was totally worth it, you ended up on a beautiful Glacial lake. We had lunch up there and took some photo's but Casson has a habit of not just taking one photo of me it will b about 6 different shots and I was getting colder and colder until I couldn't feel my fingers!
This walk in total was about 24km.
The next day we went on another walk to Laguna Torre which was really easy for most of the way, when we got to the Laguna the wind was so strong it was almost blowing you over, we've never experienced anything like it before, Casson was leaning forward into the wind and it was holding him upright, people were falling over, although freezing, it was fun.
The walk back felt like torture though, in total it was probably about 22km so after the walk the day before both our feet were killing us and Casson's knee was pretty bad, so bad in fact that we were worried we might not be able to do the trek in Torres Del Paine in Chile.
The weather was good to us here, it changes on a daily basis and can be sunny one day and snowing and rainy the next. We had great weather both days for our walks and on our last day it rained so we chilled out all day in the hostel and played cards.
General Points
1) I introduced Casson to red wine here as it was cheaper than beer, 1.5 litres was 4 quid!!
2) We are still living in a chocolate free zone
3) I've been cooking since Buenos Aires and we've now accumulated a stock cupboard that comes everywhere with us, it makes me happy. You can do a lot with a stock cube and some spices! The food is Bland with a capital B over here
