Anna & Kerry's South America Travels
Hey guys,
(this entry is actually a day late, but were in Nazca now with cheaper internet!)
We left Pisco at about 11 am to go to Ica. The journey took about 2 hours, but the scenery was lovely. We got chatting to two Australian girls probably a couple of years older than us, and shared a taxi with them to the oasis town Huancachina. We decided to stay in a hotel called Casa de Arenas, as it had a good write up in the guide book. The place was nice, being done up while we were there, but much more expensive than the guide had stated. Rooms were nice and big, and there was a pool with a poolside bar. We wanted a bite to eat as we hadnt really had any lunch, but it was s/4 for a bag of crisps! After we had got the room sorted we went for a quick swim and a sunbathe!! Then at 4.15 pm we left to go into the desert. We went in a dune buggy, and it took us up and down the sand dunes (sort of like being on a roller coaster) Was really exciting, but scary at the same time as when u got to the edge of the really steep sand dunes, you thought that it was going to be a complete vertical drop!! After we had ridden around for a while, the buggys stopped by a reasonably big dune, and we all got off. The landscape was surreal - just mounds and mounds of sand against a blue sky. Very beautiful. We each got a sand board, and then gathered round while the instructor demonstrated what we had to do. As we were all beginners, we had to lie down on the board, with our feet sticking off the end. He then pushed us up and over the edge of the dune. you could really feel the adrenaline pumping while you were soaring down the dune. It was very scary but very fun at the same time. The walk back up the dune was howver not quite so fun!! After everyone had had a go or two, we mover onto another dune. This opne was far steeper, but we decided to try standing up this time. Anna kept falling over, and went down most of the way in a sort of squat position, while Kerry gave up and did the sensible thing of sticking to laying on the board! This time the buggy returned to take us back up to the top. We then moved onto an even steeper dune, that we had to climb to the top of as the buggy couldnt get there. We both decided to lay down this time, Kerry went down fine, but at the end of the dune Anna's board hit something and sort of bounced along for a bit. She got covered in sand and cut her arm a bit. After this the sun was starting to set - really really pretty big round and orange!! We headed back to the hotel, stopping at one point to look down at the oasis below. When we arrived back at the hotel we quickly went on the internet (veyr expensive) and then ogt something to eat - fried chicken(posibly goose or something else) rice and chips. We then got a shower and started writing in our journals.
