Anna & Kerry's South America Travels
Hey everyone,
Sorry we have been slacking with journal entries lately, but have not done anything since arriving in Puno really. Got here at 6am Thursday morning, but had no sleep on the bus so we were shattered. Went straight to a hotel, had to wait half an hour in reception for the room. Then when we got in it the beds werent made and it hadnt been cleaned so it was obvious we had got the room of the people who had just checked out. They said they would be back soon to clean it, but 3 days later and its still the same!! Slept all day as we both felt really ill - tired, weak, feverish, racing heart and fast breathing. Didnt eat anything either, but werent hungry. Slept all night as well! In the morning we still werent feeling right so decided to see a doctor as I had got a red rash on my stomach as well and Kerry was feeling sick so thought we might have got a virus or something. Got a little 3 wheeled motorbike with carriage on the back kind of taxi to the hospital, and a security guard took us in to the reception. No one spoke any English! Lucky we had brought the Spanish dictionary along!! Were taken into a little room where there was a lady in turquoise clothes (doctor I guess) She took our names, ages, nationality and wrote it in a big register book. Then took our temperatures (no fancy electronic thermometer, but a glass rod with liquid inside) blood pressure (again no fancy digital monitor or self inflating pump, but a velcro strap with a pressure dial, hand pump and stethescope), and asked us about our symptoms. Couldnt explain very well as didnt know the Spanish words, so sort of mimed out sleeping, and fever and dizzy when standing up. She then had a quick look at my rash. We waited in the room for about 10 mins for a doctor to come through and see us. In this time we observed the room - there was one trolley that Kerry was sitting on (bright orange) a few old rotting blue wooden kitchen cabinets, with draws that didnt fit in properly, a sink, a desk and a trolley with various glass bottles of liquid in with plastic cones on top. Doctors kept rushing in and taking things off the trolley, and then coming back a few mins later with less liquid in the bottles! Eventually the doctor came to see us. Listened to Kerry's breathing and looked at my rash. Said we had altitude sickness and would give us some oxygen. We were taken into another room to wait, where there were 3 beds and a sink. Very basic, and nothing else in the whole room. About 10 mins later they took us to the ward and told us each to sit on a bed. A nurse put a pipe into my nose and then attached it over my ears and turned the oxygen on. It was turned up really high, and the oxygen shot up my nose making me cough! She turned it down a bit, and it felt a bit better, but still like I was gonna have a nose bleed. The oxygen was coming out of a big tank that was next to the bed, and had a little pressure dial on the side of the tank. In the ward there were 6 beds (very basic, no wheels or anything - reminded us of sort of WW2 sort of hospital if any of u have seen Pearl Harbour) 3 of the oxygen tanks, no windows, lights above all the beds, some of the beds didnt have curtains around them. Then on the floor right next to Kerrys bed was a big metal pot full of some kind of red liquid. Looked a bit too pink to be blood but cant be sure. I was praying she wouldnt faint! About 10 mins later another nurse came over and hooked Kerry up to another oxygen tank. We laid there for about another 45 minutes, people kept coming and going. There was a Peruvian man in the bed next to us who kept moaning as if in pain, then security guards came in, a maintenance man, then some visitors for the man. At one point Kerry was lying on the bed with her eyes shut. Oh God shes fainted I thought. Spoke to her and luckily she was just having a nap! !When we had had all the oxygen, the doctor came around and unhooked us and gave us the bill. 10 soles for consultaition and 6 soles for oxygen. So in all only like 3 pounds. Wouldnt bother claiming it on insurance. Went to reception and paid the bill and then left. Didnt really feel any different so went back to the hotel to rest and read. Went out for dinner later that night but neither of us ate much, and slept through till the next day. That was yesterday, where we felt a lot better, and did some washing and planned a bit of itinery for Bolivia. Went out for dinner last night - had to wait ages as they messed up the order, but ate quite a lot, and this seemed to make us feel better as it was our first proper meal since Wednesday. Today we have felt basically back to normal, booked to go on a tour of the islands on Lake Titicaca tomorrow for 2 days so prob wont hear from us till bout Wed. Was definately an experience, but we are fine now!! Hope you all had a lovely Easter - no easter eggs here boo!! Speak soon Love Anna and Kerry xxxx
