Amy's Adventures
Merry Christmas from Oz!!
The past month has just flown by, it's beginning to scare to me that I have less than 3 months left now. I've got into a lovely routine of going to bed at 3 and waking up at 10, the thought of working again is pretty daunting!
I'm loving Australia but it was a major shock coming from Asia - a pint is $8!! Yesterday I brought a cup of tea from Starbucks to nurse my boxing day hangover and it cost $5!!!!!!!!! I've been living off of jam sandwiches and Pasta to fund my newly found addiction to alcohol (It is just impossible to sleep in a 10 bed dorm sober).
Alot of the people I met in Asia are in Sydney now so it's been great meeting up with them again and catching up. I've spent the last 2 weeks in a camper van with 3 smelly boys traveling from Sydney to Melbourne. We had by far the WORSE camper in the whole of Oz, it was an absolute heap and drank so much petrol. It stank and there was enough room for 2 people (not 4 like we were told). The thing was covered in GollyWogs and on the back it said "Better to be black than gay, at least you don't have to tell you parents" Oh my god, I was so embarrassed driving it. Everywhere we went people took pictures or gave us filthy looks. Despite the horrific decor, we had an amazing time! We visited so many beautiful places, to save money we camped in various national parks and secluded beaches so there were no toilets etc... we just washed in the sea (yes I'm a minger) and used public loos. I have definitely got over my fear of germs! We also drove along the Great Ocean Road which was awesome but it was SO COLD, it was actually unbearable. We didn't have a decent warm outfit between us, it got that bad we had to wear socks with our flip flops.
We spent a day at Phillip Island. It's just like the Isle of Wight but the wildlife is 10 times better. We saw Koalas, Kangeroos and Wombats. The best part by far were the penguins. Phillip Island is famous for being home to the smallest penguins in the world, every night at 9pm thousands of them come out of the sea to sleep in their nests on the beach. It was actually amazing, they were so cute, about 30cm tall. We could watch them feed their babies and try and fight off the seals that were waiting to eat them by the shore..... well worth the frozen fingers and toes we developed waiting for them.
So far my favorite place in Oz by far has been Byron Bay - actual heaven on earth!! It's a lovely little hippy town with just a few small shops and 2 nightclubs. It's small enough that you get to know everyone there and the beach is beautiful. I had a surfing lesson with one of the guys I'm traveling with, I can stand!!!!............but then I quickly fall flat on my face.
Christmas day was really weird - everything I associate with Christmas didn't happen. I missed Christmas dinner so ended up having Mc Donalds on Bondai Beach. We brought santa hats and had an orphan party, nursing our sorrows with Goon (cheap boxed wine). It was a really fun day but skyping everyone at home that night made me feel really homesick..... glad to have that day out of the way now!
Anyway, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. I will update again in the new year!
