My January has been pretty action packed - The north of Australia is SO much better than the south! I thought my first month in Oz was great but nothing compares to the Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, it's just so beautiful.
I did a 2 day trip to Cape Tribulation where I met some local ozzie guys in a bar, they asked if I wanted to go tubing with them. I was abit worried about the crocs, water snakes etc... but it was so much fun!!! We got beaten up by loads of rocks and I had 23 mozzy bites but it was such a great day. I saw so much wildlife, I came out of the forest with 3 leeches stuck to my feet. I freaked out because I couldn't get them off, there was so much blood running over my feet I was heaving. Luckily someone had a lighter and burnt them off but the whole process has scared me for life, it was just so disgusting.
On a happier note, I went scuba diving which was AMAZING!!!!! The first thing I saw when I got down were loads of nemos!! I saw turtles, sting ray........ and a white tip shark!!! Basically everything that is in finding nemo. I made the stupid mistake of flying and diving all within 24hours so made myself practically deaf for over a week - Not fun, I really wouldn't recommend it.
I met Mitch a Canadian guy with a car so we agreed to drive down to Brisbane together and split the fuel. It's saved me an absolute fortune, the price of public transport is just disgusting. He introduced me to couch surfing.... we haven't paid for hardly any food/alcohol/accommodation in about 10 days now! The ozzies are so friendly. The first couple cooked us such a lovely roast dinner, I know it sounds like nothing but when you haven't had any home cooked food in 5 months,it was actual luxury - I wanted to lick the plate!
I met a great group of Irish, we did a 3 day boat trip to the Whitsunday islands. It was the whitest sand and clearest sea I've ever seen. It was a party boat with 52 people, the evening were pretty mental but we visited some amazing places during the day and got to do lots of snorkeling. I really wish I had an underwater camera, it was just incredible.
The past few days I've been driving down through the floods to get to Fraiser island - the largest sand island in the world. We went straight through Rockhampton, where the worst of the floods were. It was so sad, most of the water has gone now but the aftermath is crazy. The sewers all burst so the whole town STINKS! There's rubbish everywhere and everything was covered in brown slush. I met some girls who were there when it got hit and they showed me a picture of a man under water holding on the M of the Mc Donalds sign over the door so he didn't get washed away. The water must have been about 6 meters high! So many people have lost money on trips they booked or had to spend a fortune on flights on the dry areas. I can't believe how lucky I've been, it's been hot and sunny everyday :0D
