Bagamoyo
Clara and I went to visit Bagamoyo for a night to start setting up her research. She will be studying the impact of tourism of the livelihoods of local artisans. Bagamoyo is a little beach town North of Dar es Salaam. The Government has supposedly been investing a lot of money in the town to increase tourism but to me it is still a sleepy little fishing village. During the 19th century Bagamoyo was the departure point to Zanzibar for slave and ivory trading until German Colonization. The town is filled with ruins of buildings (see my pics) built by the Arabic slave traders. If there was money to renovate and decorate these building, Bagamoyo could become a truly beautiful and exotic tourist spot.
At the tourist board office Clara and I met Sadeki, who we enlisted as our local tour guide for the day. Sadeki, who was trained as a tour guide in a development program, showed us the town and practiced Swahili with us! (I'm picking some things up.) He also took us through the neighborhoods where we met lots of children who were very interested in us, and some wanted to practice English. As we walked by children would appear through the windows and doorways, shouting Mzungu (Swahili for foreigner or European) and waving! Everybody in Bagamoyo was so friendly, such a different atmosphere than Dar es Salaam. Clara and I will be coming back next week to do some interviews with local artisans for her project and Sadeki will be helping translate.
