Amy in Africa
After safari Tom and I went to Zanzibar for a relaxing beach holiday! We stayed in Stone Town for a night and then went snorkelling at prison island before heading off to the Northern secluded beach of Kendwa Rocks. During our stay we also visited the Red Colobus monkeys at Jazoni Forest which are indigenous to Zanzibar and went on a spice tour where we sampled exotic spices and fruits.
Visiting Zanzibar was like travelling across the world to another country compared to mainland Tanzania. Zanzibar was part of the Omani Arabic Empire up to the 19th c and was home to the Sultan. It was important for spices as well as the slave and ivory trade from mainland Tanzania to Arabia. The island itself is a mix of Muslim and Swahili culture that is apparent everywhere from the beautifully carved Zanzibar doors to the Muslim women hidden in the traditional kangas. Overall I thought that Zanzibar must be paradise. The colors of the water, the sand, the buildings, and the people look like something perfectly drawn from my imagination. It was a wonderful place to visit.
