Hi everyone! Hope you're all ok!
On Thursday 31st we went on a village walk in Kande, and visited the local school and hospital. It was really interesting but you felt sorry for the kids there, as the school was very basic and only a very very small number go on to University.
On our way back two little girls gave us their addresses and asked us to write to them which was quite sweet.
On Friday 1st August we had a chilled out day and just read some books in the hammocks at the beach, and in the evening we had a hog roast which was nice!
On Saturday we left Kande Beach for Lilongwe. The accommodation was quite nice and we had a chat with the British owners and watched some cricket. For lunch we had Nando's - Lilongwe is pretty developed which was a nice surprise!
On the Sunday we were due to leave early but our truck broke down, so we had to wait a few hours to get a spare part, and in the meantime we went to the local curio market and bought a little carved pot for about $2. Once we got on the road again, we reached the Zambia border, only to find that the visa fee was $150 each! We'd hoped to take a day trip into Zimbabwe to do a walk with lions, but the double entry visa was $400! The Irish, however, got in for free!
We stayed the night in Wildlife Camp at South Luangwa National Park. It's a wild camp which meant that elephants and hippos walk about at night!
The next morning we did an early morning game drive and we saw hippos, giraffes, elephants, and crocs, and then went back to the camp for brunch (pancakes, yum!) and then sat by the pool reading. That evening we went out on a night game drive which was exciting, as we ended up about a foot away from an elephant and some lions. It was Derry's birthday as well so JJ made him a birthday cake over the fire!
On Tuesday 5th, we were up at 4.45am and left for Bridge Camp, stopping off for snacks along the way. The camp was a bit rubbish and we had to pitch our tents in the tiniest space, and the camp was full of miserable (sorry) Germans, lol! It did have a nice bar though!
The next day we drove to Lusaka which was the most developed city by far, so we took advantage and had pizza! We then drove until early evening to Choma, where we were camping. We were greeted by two really cute jack russell crosses, and they also had a crocodile pen, but that was a bit depressing seeing them all cooped up.
On Thursday 7th we left for Victoria Falls at 5.30am, where we are staying at The Waterfront, which is a big campsite with a restuarant, views of the Zambezi, internet cafe etc. In the evening we went on a sunset booze cruise down the Zambezi which was really good fun. Drinks and food were included and it was a tri-birthday celebration for Simon, Derry and Jo's birthdays. Much to the bemusement of the rest of the boat, we ended up balancing beer bottles on our heads and doing hippo impressions. Funny at the time though! After the cruise we had a really nice chocolate cake for Jo (another one!), and then headed to the camp "disco"! The disco was basically a hut with really rubbish music, but Simon still managed a superb dance to Bat Out of Hell! The next day we visited the Falls which was amazing, and was a great way to end our tour of Africa.
Yesterday Amy went on a helicopter ride over the falls which had really amazing views - pictures just don't do it justice - and we went to watch Derry and Will doing a bungee jump off of the bridge over the Falls. Even Jim, the oldest member of the group, did the zip line across the canyon! We also became Zimbabwean billionaires, as the locals were selling 100 billion dollar notes to tourists.
Today Simon's off white water rafting which is meant to be really good, and Amy is getting her nails done! :-)
On Monday we're off to Johannesburg where we stay for a few nights before flying to India. Just checked the weather in Delhi and it's about 40 degress there! Can't wait!
Amy and Simon xx
