It was finally time to go out and hand around resumes. We had been in Queenstown for 5 days and were running out of money fast. It's a bad season for jobs, as winter usually drives people away, but when the ski fields open in a few weeks, it usually gets a bit better. We weren't too hopeful for a job, as it was quiet, but thought it would be good to beat the flock of backpackers and get in first. We split up so it didn't look bad, both of us going into places to apply together, so I went one way & Kristy the other! We had a plan to meet up at 11.30m at the hostel.
So away we went! Pretty much everywhere I went said they weren't hiring for another 2-4 weeks, which sucked, but it was expected. Some places were really rude though, and I decided I was glad they weren't hiring! If they were that rude to strangers/customers, what would they be like to staff?!
Most places, generally, were good. They talked to me about previous work places and wished me luck. One of the last places I went to, was a pub on the wharf. I was talking to a young girl there, and she saw that I was from Gatton. She said that she had an aunt that was from there! So we got talking about that and discovered we both come from the same place in Brisbane! How insane is that! :) That place reminded me of The Royal, and I really wanted to work there!
After that I went back to the hostel to meet up with Kristy. I got to my room and forgot to go to Fergburger to hand my resume in! As I was walking back down the stairs I ran into Kristy coming back up. She came with me to hand my last few resumes in, and there was one place I wanted to hand one in that I forgot. I always wanted to get a coffee there, so it worked out. I went in, and handed my resume in, and ordered my coffee, and while I was waiting, talked to the two guys who were working. While I was there, three other people came in and applied. That made my chances drop... But it turned around when one of the guys asked if I'd like to come in for a trail the next morning! I was pretty excited! I walked outside to where Kristy was waiting, and in shock told her I got a job!
We were pretty happy for a while, and we went into a few rental places to enquire about places to rent. There weren't many cheap ones that were in town. We were trying to find another rental place where I got my phone out and had a missed call. I called them back and they wanted to speak to Kristy (we have one phone between us). They wanted her for a trail tomorrow as well! We were super lucky! In a town that isn't hiring, we both got jobs in the first day!
That bit of news had us on cloud 9! We went and booked a 'Thrillology' which is a deal of 3 bungee jumps or a canyon swing for $399! Saving us a lovely $220 :) We choose to do the 'Nevis' which is the tallest bungee in Australasia, the first bungee site in the world, where we can jump together & the Nevis Canyon Swing! Not going to lie, I'm pretty excited! We have an open dated ticket, so we can do them whenever we like.
After that we had to go to the bank to open accounts to get paid! We needed to make an appointment, so we got one for 4pm. We had a few hours to kill and Kristy needed clothes for work, so we caught the bus to Frankton where they have a shopping centre type thing. We got what we needed and headed to 'New World', which is a grocery store. It was pretty cheap, and they don't really have a grocery store in Queenstown, so we stocked up while we were here. But, it was an amazing shop! We got HEAPS of fresh fruit, veggies & salad then some meat and nuts! Our trolley looked so good & healthy! Hopefully with that and exercising, I might actually get a bit fit! That would be awesome!
We came back into town, and it was getting on in time. We quickly headed back to the hostel to put away our groceries & padlock the bag (Yes, people really steal our food! It's sad we have to go to extreme lengths for food!) then headed back up to the bank. It was pretty straight forward, we got an account that would be good for just work and saving, with no fancy extras. So that was fantastic! When we were done at the bank, and got set up with internet banking, and everything, it was after 5pm. It was such a busy day!
We just headed back to the hostel to make some dinner, which was going to be tortellini with Emily. It was so good and the perfect size, I wasn't still hungry after nor was I super full. We wanted to see about working for accommodation her at Base, so we went to enquire, and as we want to do promo work, had to see Louie. He said there might be something coming up, and to go see him the next day. He said photography would be good, so that's Kristy! We came back up to the room after that and watched the rest of 'Bridesmaids' before heading down to the bar to participate in 'Mini Bike Racing' where we could win a 15 000ft skydive!! How awesome is that prize! Kristy & I raced against each other, but she beat me, of course, and went into the next round. She lost then though, which was lame!
But there's always next week...
