Saturday 18th April
I don't sleep well and welcome the morning.
We have breakfast and pack our stuff. We checkout and walk to the church. All is closed and locked up. We walk around the town and later on our way back it's still locked up. Maybe no church today. The internet is bad and it's virtually impossible to find info on churches on the internet. We go back to the hotel and wait in the lobby until 1pm.
We start our journey to the salt flats by 4x4 today. First stop is train cemetery for cook photos. The trip to the salt flats is supposed to be 30-40min.
We stop just before the flats to see how the local ppl mine salt. It must be very dry, then milled and my mixed with iodine. They get about 1 boliviano per 1/2 kilo.
It's brown and all of a sudden it's white. There's water and small mountains of salt drying out. Soon it's a sea of flat white everywhere with mountain shadows at the edges.
It's amazing and beautiful. We stop for salt perspective photos and the salt in our clothes looks like bleach. continue on we arrive at our basic dorms just before 6pm. 5-6 to a room; salt brick walls, dodgy electricity and a cute baby vacunia who is sadly no longer wild. We get hot drinks and then dinner at 7pm. Malcolm brushes up on his poker. Just after 8 all the power is off unexpectedly, so off we go back to our dorms. Malcolm takes photos of the amazing night sky. It's so awesome out here!
