After a not so gruelling overnight coach ride to Rainbow beach we caught up with a few people who we were sailing with and sat down waiting for the briefing for our 4 wheel drive trip to Fraser island.
So once the guys from the hostel had scared us to death about getting eaten by a dingo and bogging the car, we were put in our groups and sent off to the supermarket. i wasnt too happy we had been put with a group of guys and shopping with them proved rather difficult but off went for an early night we were sure it would be ok in the morning.
We rose early had breakfast, loaded up the car and after a few more warnings about not driving in the sea off we went, it started well (i mean we are all smiling in the group picture arnt we). Heiki drove first and the guys insisted we did a wheel spin as soon as we got off the ferry so we got a little bogged but nothing to worry about and off we went.
The drive was amazing pure white sand and crashing waves, the scenery was amazing and a completley new experience. After about an hour and a halfs drive we headed inland to our first camping spot, it was a beautiful camp ground very remote and surrounded by rainforest. After setting up the tents we drove to lake mckenzie it was so beautiful the sand was soft and fluffy and the water crystal clear, but a tad cold. We had a few hours there played a bit of frisbee soaked up the sun, the days are a little shorter now its winter so we got as much sun as possible.
By the time we got back to camp it was dark so we cooked by torchlight and had a few glasses (ok mugs) of good old goon. it was was a bit of a quiet night as we were warned before we left of the noise curfew in the campgrounds and i dont think any of us fancied a $200 fine.
Next morning we rose very early it was still dark, we had to get a move on as the once the tide comes in you cant drive on the beach. it prooved difficult getting the boys up but eventually the crawled out we had brekky and set off to indian head. Once ther we climbed to the top and took in the amazing view of the beach and the ocean. We could see whales flicking there tales and splashing around on there way north to the warm waters. From there we drove to the chamagne pools which are big rock pools in a secluded spot between two beaches as the waves crash over it fills the pools making them bubbly thus the name! We did a little inland driving then searched for our next camping spot tinight it was beach camping no toilets no nothing.
After struggling to get behind the dunes where we were camping as the sand was so deep and soft we set up out tents ans walked to eli creek which runs into the sea so you can just float down it, the water is so pure you can drink it.
We went back to camp had dinner then again the lovley goon came out we all had a little too much and the drinking games started but there was just too many of us to play it so we just laughed at everyone else. During the night we had left a bag of rubbish out and we heard the Dingos attacking it, i was desperate for the loo but didnt want to get savaged.
Everyone was a little hungover the next day it took us all a while to get going after breakfast a ranger came around to tell us the conditons on the beach driving conditions had got quite bad overnight. so we got ourselves together and went to lake wabby the drive in was exciting really rough and reall off roading. the lake was stunning with huge sand dunes its a shame we didnt have longer there we all said we we could have stayed a week.
Unfortunatly our time on the beautiful Fraser island had come to an end the conditions driving back to the ferry were pretty bad and i felt a bit car sick so me and georgie ( a friend we made on our sailing trip) got out to walk on to the ferry, no sooner had the car drove on the ferry set off and left us on the island!! it woulldnt have been a bad place to be stranded but 10 minutes later another one came to rescue us.
I dont like to moan on the blog as its all about our adventures but unfortunatly the group of swiss german boys in our group were nasty, horrible people who frankly ruined our trip. the group in the other car were great so at least we some nice people but thats all ill say about that, this is a happy page not a negative page he he!
Next stop NOOSA!!!
