Australia has lots of free campsites around which are all listed in the bible that is 'Camps 6'. They vary from just a lay-by with a longdrop, to eco-water-recycling-super-loos and complimentary cups of tea provided by the local lions club as part of the 'driver reviver' scheme, to peaceful little woodland enclosures with no trucks and hundreds of birds. After a little bit we've got savvy to avoiding roadside sites (which seemed to specialise in bad BAD toilets and noisy trucks) but the last site we stayed on was quite special.
We drove through the entrance and along a vey long driveway bordered by stagnant looking flooded puddles and no sign of anyone. Thankfully it eventually opened out to a campsite with plenty of other caravans. We picked our spot right on the riverbank and were pleased to discover that campfires were permitted. I made veggie curry while Josh set up a campfire supervised by a fluffy kookaburra sat in a low tree. We passed a pleasant evening listening to the older Aussies next door put the world to rights while we polished off some goon wine.
The next morning the river was like glass reflecting perfect azure skies and a pelican cruising around in the early sunlight not making the slightest ripple. The kookaburra was sat on a sign right outside the van door and there were ibis, black swans, wood ducks and magpies everywhere. It was beautiful. We packed up and went in search of a hot breakfast. Not a bad end to our campervan adventures!
