Another 3 days of driving took us to stay one night in North Malawi, where we headed straight to the lake to cool off and were soon surrounded by naked local kids who were keen for waterfights! Also went to look at the local market and found more nice sunset paintings to buy! We got up early the next morning to see the sun rise over the lake which was stunning, great colours! We then headed to Iringa in Tanzania, at altitude which was nice as it was cooler. The vegetation is still really green and tropical. We stayed at a farmhouse eating local food and drinking the 'taste of the nation' - konyagi (vodka/gin!) served in plastic sachets! The last day of driving took us to Dar es Salaam, the jumping off point for Zanzibar, famous for konyagi slushies! he drive was again beautiful, through national parks, but loads of speed bumps (4 in a row every time!). The city traffic was carnage but the campsite was nice and on the beach.
We caught a local bus to the ferry to Zanzibar, had breakfast in a casino as it was the only place open on sunday morning! In Zanaibar we spent the first night in Stone Town, birthplace of Freddie Mercury, full of old buildings and lots of alley ways to get lost in! Great sunset over the sea folloe\wed by supper at the night market for cheap seafood. The next morning started with a tour of Stone Town, including the OLd Fort, House of Wonders (first to have running water and electricity) and Livingstone House. We then did a spice tour at a local farm, before arriving at Kendwa Beach and our nicest accommodation yet, ont he white sand beach, with stunning views of turqoiuse sea. Bizzarely most mornings the sky ended up black and cloudy but the afternoons were always tropical paradise! One evening we did a sunset cruise on a dhow woth AJ and Paul - we had the whole boat just for us so it was really nice and chilled and the sunset was amazing again!
