Alyson, Emily, Julie & Katie's Adventures
We are in Luang Prabang at the moment, which is in Northern Laos. I thought i would go back a few days though, and give you a little account of our adventures kayaking the Nam Song in Vang Vieng. We booked ourselves on a little kayaking trip and after a tuk tuk ride to the river they gave us a 3 second lesson on paddling. We managed to grab a couple of double canoes and split up: Katie and Em, Alyson and I. Well, as it turns out Katie is a pro kayaker and Em spent a pleasant few hours being skillfully steered down the river and over the few rapid sections. Alyson and myself on the other hand turned out to be less competent. At the first rapid section we looked on in pity as the girl in front of us went down sideways. Pride comes before a fall. We managed to hit a rock at full ramming speed, mount the rock in the kayak, slide back down, capsize and swirl around in the rapids for several minutes. This also unfortunately caused a backlog of other kayaks behind us and several other peolpe fell out aswell. On the second small rapid section we improved somewhat by managing to stay in the boat, however i am not sure our guide has ever seen anyone take that particular section going backwards. Ah well, we didn't let it dampen our spirits and we managed to sing and teach our guide some great new english phrases (not sure how much his next group will appreciate "its all gone Pete Tong, they keep falling in the f#@^*:g water" though). We also did a bit of caving on this excursion. Although don't think extreme pot-holing for this because it wasn't, one guy managed to do the entire route holding a bottle of beer! But it was plenty scary for us! Saw two ginormous spiders sitting in the dark damp caves and nearly all ran out screaming, not very hardcore! Anyway got to finish now but we will have another update on Luang Prabang soon.
