It rained all night and was still raining this morning. It was quite heavy rain so we decided to go to the movies. There is only 1 cinema nearby but for some reason, movies don’t start until about 4.30pm. So, the only thing left to do was go shopping.
We decided to go back to a small centre we had passes yesterday. When we got there, we found a lot of the shops closed. We looked in a few and then eased back to an old favourite, Walmart!!
When we arrived and parked, it was pouring. Our little travel umbrellas were no match for the rain so we were quite wet when we got inside. To dry off, we walked down every aisle in the store - general merchandise, groceries and pharmacy. We had dried off by the time we left, straight out into the rain again.
Just before we left Walmart, I saw the flash flood warning on my phone. We didn’t know which area it was for but assumed it was Poipu where we were staying. There was already flooding when we had left a few hours earlier.
There didn’t seem to be any point in going back yet so we went down a few blocks where there was a small Macy’s. It was lunchtime so we found Kalapaki Joe’s in the same complex and settled in for lunch and cocktails. Kalapaki Joe’s holds the title of being the westernmost sports bar in the USA.
It was still raining when we left but finally stopped about 4pm when we got back to Poipu. We decided to go and see if the blowhole, Spouting Horn, we had seen on Saturday was more active in this weather. It certainly was! We also saw a couple of very big splashes out to sea indicating whale activity. The water was very brown in some areas. It was nothing like the clear blue water we had admired yesterday.
Back at the hotel, we went down to the beachfront to see if there were any turtles or seals today. We didn’t see any so we sat in the poolside bar and had another cocktail.
We went out to dinner about 7pm and got another flash flooding alert. The weather reports say we will probably get some more rain overnight and tomorrow should be drier but overcast. The Northside of the island got the most rain today. Some of the bridges we crossed yesterday were closed due to flooding today. We will ha e grey skies and showers until we leave on Friday. Hopefully the big island will be drier!
