Brilliant day in Cabo San Lucas, the Lands End of Baja California, literally at the tip of the land where two seas merge. We had been here before with the girls about 10 years ago and it really hadn't changed very much at all. When we were here before we had just come from 10 days on a wonderful liveaboard diving yacht in the Sea of Cortez, a much more unspoilt wilderness area, much like Sinai used to be in the 1980s. Cabo seemed like Sin City after that, being pretty much the only commercial holiday resort in about 1000 miles. It's somewhat like Marbella in flavour and attracts the same sort of crowd. Jen is always jetting down here with her gal pals and of course the first Sex and the City movie featured Cabo quite heavily. I actually prefer La Paz and the more unspoilt Sea of Cortez, but Cabo does have a certain wild west meets utter bling kind of appeal….
Anyway, we were back and the day was blisteringly hot, blue and cloudless and….. windless…… Absolutely no karmic wind at all. We got ashore by about 930 and had a wander around the town centre. There is quite a lot of shopping: leather, beachwear and silver jewellery. We bought some nice things. Also went into a fabulous cigar and coffee shop for a drink and to use their wifi which was superfast. They had the largest humidor I have ever seen stuffed full of Cuban cigars. Plus a wall stocked with tequilas. We managed to facetime with both girls which was lovely. Lucy was at our house with her friend Bryony. She'd gone down to unwrap the tree ferns and bananas for me as hopefully we are past the risk of prolonged frost in the UK now???? You never can tell…. So nice to see them both and chat for a while especially as this place is so full of memories of being here with them. Wished they'd been here today…….
Anyway, after that of course we had to have a margarita and we found a little honky bar place where the woman mixed quite a mean one. It was pretty good. Went down a treat.
Then we walked to a beach near the harbour, not the big long enormous beach with the hotels all behind it. It was pretty crowded with local families but the sand was lovely, the sea was crystal clear and just the right temperature and very calm. So different from when we were here last time when we really could not swim in the sea in Cabo at all. We could see lots of seals and pelicans from the beach. There is so much wildlife here. Whales just off the lands' end.
Stayed on the beach for a couple of hours but then it was getting close to the last tender time so we reluctantly headed back to the ship. Cabo is not everyone's cup of tea but I do like Baja very very much and it would be good to come back again, especially to the Sea of Cortez one day before too long.
We were starving by the time we got on board because we didn't eat ashore so we grabbed some tea and then went and had a swim in the pool on the rear terrace deck. Lovely. Bob went off for his power nap then and I stayed behind and chatted to people and watched as we sailed away. Got a very good view of the Land's End and the Arch of Cabo as we left. We dived that with the girls when we were here before.
Had dinner on a table for two for a change and then went to a piano show. Excellent pianist and very funny.
