Semana Santa is the most important holiday in Central America and is held the week before Easter. This year it fell on the last week of March and for our week off school me, Mali, Becky and Carly decided to go to Cancun in Mexico!!
Now unfortunately Cancun is VERY far away, but after much internet searching and guide book flicking we worked out that it could be done in a day…maybe. We all met up in San Pedro on Thursday evening and had a very excitable night not really sleeping and frequently squealing "MEXICO"!! The alarms were set for 4:30 Friday morning, and after just a couple of hours sleep we all jumped out of bed super excited. Our first bus was scheduled to set off from San Pedro station at 5:30am so we grabbed our tickets and a coffee and boarded the bus ready for a long wait, much to our surprise the engine roared into life at 5:28 and just as the clock ticked over to 5:30 we pulled out of the parking space…we were on our way to Cancun! After a perfect start our journey just got better, we were hoping off one bus straight on to the next, we had a quick stint on a boat (joined by an oven), and lots of hilarious conversations with border agency staff and after just 17 hours we found ourselves being woken up to cross the border into Mexico. Four countries in 17 hours!! We had begun in Honduras, crossed the north-eastern corner of Guatemala and bussed all the way from the bottom to the top of Belize and into Mexico in just 17 hours, we were very impressed with ourselves! We then went back to sleep for the last leg up the Mexican coast, and unbelievably pulled into the Cancun bus station at exactly 5:30am Saturday. San Pedro to Cancun in 24 hours!! :D
We spent an amazing week relaxing and partying and making friends from all over the world before we were finally forced to book our tickets back home and return to reality.
Lots of Love
