A good word to describe Carmelo is nice. It was nice, not much more though to be honest. We walked around the historical center for the afternoon and headed back to the hostel wondering what else there is to do. We found out from some American women that that's about it. We slept in a large, uncomfortable dorm with not much stopping the bugs coming in. I covered myself in Hannahs insect repellent, hoping tht would be enough. Not so (possibly because the repellent was out of date!), as I woke up covered in bites, one of which was between my eye and eyebrow, meaning my whole left-eye area was swollen up all day, but a combination of Witch Hazel, ice and antihistermines (sp?) means its almost gone already. We spent the next day on the beach doing not very much at all and got a ferry that evening back to Buenos Aires.
We had emailed a hostel to book us in but had received n reply but decided we knew it well enough to find somewhere. It turned out that this weekend is Easter, and in Argentina, a predominantly Catholic country, Easter is HUGE. We spent a good hour trying to find somewhere to stay and eventually found 1 bed in a really cool hostel. Hannah sat down there and i ran around San Telmo trying to find another bed. I returned unsuccessful but then the very nice man at the hostel rang another hostel in El Centro and they had 2 beds for one night, so we went there. We went out for drinks after a stressful few hours.
The next day (which is today) we checked out and started what we were billing up to be a day of searching for somehwere to sleep. Hannah got a phonecard and got calling while i prepared to go out to the local hostels. Hannah didn't get through to the first hostel, then phoned another which had space! We got the metro back to San Telmo and checked in, simple as that. When we got there though, i started to feel as though my bag was unusually empty. Turns out it was becuse I'd left my brand new walking trousers in Colonia. I went to a telecommunications - where I ran into Ben, the guy from Stoke Newington, again - place and phoned Uruguay at a not so cheap rate and spoke to them but they couldn't find them. I gave them my email address and am hoping to hear some good news soon. Although, it will cost me moer to go there and collect them than it cost to buy them so unless they can bring them to me i think thats a lost cause. We spent the rest of the afternoon wondering around, looking in camping shops for walking trousers - which are really expensive here, anyone planning on buying any in BA - and went to a market where as a replacement for my lost trousers i bought a shirt. A lot of places were closed due to the bank holiday.
And so now I'm in an internet cafe while hannah embraces the cultural early evening fiesta thing. It has started pouring with rain and is very humid all of a sudden. Guss and Lucy arrive tomorrow, so of course we are looking forward to that. If the weathers nice tomorrow I am going to go to a park and try and join in on a game of futbol and show the Argentines how it's really played. And then on Sunday we're going to a market and then to a Boca Juniors game.
