So, me and Hannah have been in Buenos Aires for 4 days now and have already started to love it. We arrived late on Monday night having been travelling for nearly 24 hours and barely sleeping. We got a taxi from the airport and agreed a price before with an old man who has lived in BA his whole life and seemed like a nice guy. When we arrived at the hostel he tried to charge us nearly 4 times what we agreed because he said he hadn´t included the tolls we went through. We refused to pay that much and i handed over the 90 pesos. He then said we hadn´t paid enough but hannah caught him slipping some notes down beside him so he said ´vale´ (OK) and feeling successful we went into the hostel and crashed out after grabbing something to drink and getting to know our surroundings a bit.
The next day we woke early, and I was covered in mosquito bites, so all in all a good start to the day. We had our free breakfast of cafe con leche and medialunas and then walked all around the Microcentro in the boiling heat to get to know BA. It is such a nice city, so varied from neighbourhood to neighbourhood. We were staying in San Telmo which Hannah says is quite like Shoreditch because of the trendy boutiques. The roads in San telmo are cobbled and cafes line the pavements. Then back at the hostel I walked past a bearded man mumbled hola and i noticed theEnglish accent. I asked him about it and it turned out he is in our year and went toStoke Newington School and is good friends with Lawrence and that lot! We went for dinner with him - and ate a massive steak and chips for about a fiver - and listened to his travelling stories. Having eaten to much and talked into the night we crashed out - again.
The next day we walked around some more, seeing some different areas of BA, and including the natural reserve on the coast, which is basically dried out swampland with lots of nice wildlife. We then went to the ferry portand coach station to find out about possibly seeing some areas outside of the city for a few days. We settled on a train for about 50p to Tigre, an hour north of BA. On the way back to the hostel we tried without success to find somewhere to watch the Spurs game, and then headed back to the hostel and some shade, having realised that my head was burnt, thanks to the burning sun and the number 3 haircut I now have no thanks to Rikki.
Today we went to La Boca - a poorer area of BA, which is where the futbol team Boca Juniors are from. It is an incredible place - the buildings are all multicoloured and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Hannah immediatly fell in love with it and in particular the shops, whilst I admired the bright blue and yellow Boca Juniors stadium.
Now we are in a hostel in Palermo, an area on the other side of BA, which is very different and seems more commercial than San Telmo - Hannah says like isligton... We were going to head out of town today but decided to stay because we met some guys from Brazil who have come to BA to see Bob Dylan in concert and so Hannah wants to go to that on Saturday. On Sunday I hope to go to a River Plate match and then soon after that we´ll head to Tigre.
Enjoying ourselves immensely, will try and keep this blog up!
