Right, so my last entry was over a week ago, so maybe this won´t be the most accurate of entries. We were staying at a busy hostel with slow, and popular internet so this is the first chance I´ve had.
That night we met a Danish couple who were very friendly and had been to Cuba so gave Hannah a lot of tips for when she goes. We went out and watched some music at a bar with them, and then came back to the hostel and chilled out for a while. The next day Hannah and I moved hostel yet again to go and meet Gussy and Lucy back over in Palermo. Everything went very smoothly and we spent the afternoon in a park in Palermo where I joined in a game of football with some teenagers which was really fun of course and a few nutmegs on one guy put a smile on my face. Didn´t do much that evening, went out for a nice meal with some American guys, one of whom talked about himself all evening so didn´t give us much chance to catch up between ourselves.
The next day we went to the San Telmo market and then on to La Boca for the match between Boca and Colon de Santa Fe. I was told not to go in the ´rowdy´, cheap, standing section, but to pay more to sit. I did just that, for quite a cost, and the girls decided not to pay that much, but I met another American who talked about himself all the time, called Massimo, who turned out to be a die hard Boca fan, with a tatoo of the badge, and yet it was his first game at the age of 33. I found out a lot more about him in the course of the game. But it was good to have someone to talk to, especially in English, and he took a lot of photos which he said he´ll email to me. The match was great to watch, although Boca went 2 up early on and it never looked like Colon would get back into it so it was a a slightly dull game, definitely worth it though. The fans in the in a section of the standing part are called Jugador Numero Doce (Player number 12 - a phrase which is used to describe the effect the fans give on motivating the side and intimidating the referee. I noticed this a lot at Colon had a penalty appeal turned down for what i thought was an obvious foul, and a very harsh sending off). That evening Jenny arrived and we went to a bar for the evening.
The next day, Gussy, Jenny and Lucy wet out to see more of BA and Hannah and I had a relaxing day at the hostel. We later went over to another hostel in the centre to see some of Gussy´s friends from City of London Boys, Guy and Charles, and another from Marylebone called Eddy. Their hostel was a lot more lively than ours and we decided to move there on Wednesday. We ended up seeing the three of them that evening for some drinks and then to a bar, which Gussy enjoyed most of all (she possibly had a bit too much to drink).
The next day was another lazy one, Hannah and I went to the Tourist Info office and got info on buses to the places we wanted to go - Hannah south towards Patagonia, me north to Rosario. We then booked hannah´s ticket and headed back to the hostel. We went out to a Drum and Bass club that evening which was fun and made me appreciate the smoking ban in England so much more, my eyes stung because of the smoke in there.
The next day was Wednesday so we moved hostel and then went out and saw more of BA, which was easier now that we were at a hostel so near the centre. I can´t remember what we did that day to be honest, can´t have been that interesting.
On Thursday, I went to a camping shop and replaced my walking trousers, which I have just about got over the loss of. The others went to La Boca and saw Caminito and bought us all cheaper seated tickets for the Boca game that evening. It was a Copa Libertadores (equivalent of the European Champions League) game against one of the best teams from Chile - Colo Colo. It was the group stage and last week colo Colo had beaten Boca 2-0 to leave Boca third in a group of 4 where the top 2 go through and needing to win in order not to leave themselves in a near impossible situation. The atmosphere was incredible, the 3000 travelling Colo Colo fans not intimidated by the 12th Player. We had an incredible view from high up in the stand behind one of the goals. Although Riquelme was still injured, Palacio, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, returned and lit up the game. Colo Colo scored early on, then Boca had a man sent off and missed a penalty before Palermo (the highest scoring player in Boca history) equalised. Colo Colo then went 2-1 up just before half time. We chatted at half time to some die hard Boca fans who instructed me to keep the fact that I though Pele was better than (their God) Maradone quiet. The second half was even better, with us joining in the jumping and cheering and arm waving, as Boca Equalised again before going 3-2, then 4-2 up, before Colo Colo got a late consolation. An incredible game, and quite a game to be the first for Jenny. We walked back to the hostel and all crashed out pretty soon after.
On Friday me and Charles spent most of the day waiting around for the time when the football that the hostel organised to start. It was an intense 6-side underneath a huge Autopista (mostorway), in which we beat a team of Argentines and Germans, there must be nothing more satisfying for an Englishman! That evening Hannah and Lucy went and got their bus to Puerto Madryn, a 19 hour journey south, Gussy, Jenny and Eddy went clubbing, and me, Charles and Guy played some table tennis and chilled out at the hostel. Guy and Charles left that night for a flight to El Calafate in the south, so the next day it was only Gussy, Jenny, Eddy and I left over. I left at 12 to get my bus to Rosario, which all went smoothly and took me to where I am now. I got a taxi to the hostel which had 1 bed left, which I snapped up. I was slightly worried about meeting people here, but it turned out that the first 2 people I saw were 2 men from Leeds who had played football with us the day before in Buenos Aires. I quickly settled in and went for a walk around Rosario, which I am starting to like more and more. The river front is a nice place for a stroll and the people here are incredibly friendly. Omar and Robbie (Leeds guys) introduced me to some Argentinians they had met and we all went to a karaoke bar and then clubbing together that night. In the end Omar and Robbie left because they didn´t like the club so it was just me and 3 Argentinians. They were incredibly friendly and we just about managed to communicated in a mixture of my broken Spanish and their slightly better English. The club had a band playing Beatles, Rolling Stone, Dire Straights etc covers so I had a great time. The problem was afterwards, when we ending up wandering the streets for no less than 2 hours trying to find a taxi which was available to take us. That meant we got back at 7.30 this morning and that I have wasted most of today sleeping and now doing this. I should stop now and go and see more of Rosario.
Although it was weird being on my own for the first time, I am thorughly enjoying it and am meeting people from all over the world here; an Aussie guy, one from Denmark, some girls from Israel, a man from Tunisia, the argentines and the ones from Leeds. I plan on staying here for a couple of more nights and then will probably go to Cordoba, which further west than I orignially planned but I´ve heard great things about it.
