Today we heard about riots that had happened in the centre of Kampala due to the elections and were glad to be heading away from them. As we drove towards Jinja we drove over the dam on the White Nile which was covered by armed police and small tanks....
The campsite at Jinja was lovely - leafy, gorgeous views over the Nile, showers with a view of the Nile, a TV, good bar, cats and monkeys! All but Danielle upgraded again as we were here for 3 nights. Steph got her place in an ensuite dorm first and was surprised to find we did not join her but got a 4 bed dorm for me, Lauren, Hunter and Tanya - a bit of a recurring event avoiding her!
Managed to catch up on the six nationas matches - the Wales game on repeat then the next matches live netween swimming in the Nile. Also got the best laundry done for ages - stone washed by the local women and sooo clean!
Next day most of us headed for the river and did either rafting, kayaking or riverboarding down the rapids. Most of the rapids were either grade IV or V but very deep so there was very litte chance of hitting rocks. I ended up in the chicken boat but was nowhere near the most nervous! Jaq (the South African guy) did his best to reassure the Aussie girl but she wasn't having any of it. The first rapid was a 16 foot drop which woke us all up but we made it to the end of the rapids without flipping. On the last rapid (grade V!) we could jump out and do it without the raft. As I had always regretted not doing this in the Zambezi I was the first to leap when Jaq gave the order. The rapid was actually the easy bit - the swimming afterwards was tiring and in the end I was taken onboard another raft to go ashore.
We all had a great bbq lunch then back to camp.
The next day was a chilling day - sorting stuff out, sunbathing and massages before the sunset cruise with everyone but Lauren and Hunter as both were still rough with typhoid. We had a lovely boozy cruise - taking Jo's advice to stock up on alcohol before we returned to dock. This was helped as we left half an hour late waiting for ice so this just increased our drinking time! When we docked we all decided a dip in the Nile was a good idea - much fun was had!
Glad to be leaving the next day as it was the day before the elections and there was talk about trouble getting over the border to Kenya
