Crossing over into Rwanda the scenery seemed to immediately change to lush jungle and better housing. Thatched roofs have been outlawed since the genocide.....
We arrived in Kigali the capital and this was my first real chance to upgrade. We (Tanya, Lauren, Hunter, Bubu, Ana and myself) got a sizx bed dorm as Danielle said he wanted to camp and we didn't want to share with Steph!
We decided to go for Chinese with our food budget for tonight - a first for Jo and Steve! Highlights of the evening were Steph staying at the hostel and me falling down the metal stairs outside the restuarant in the rain!
The next morning we headed to the genocide museum. A well done and harrowing experience demonstrating how horrid people can be to each other. The worst we decided were the men of God who turned their entire congregations over to the miltia while they were still in the church. I didn't feel that I could take photos there - the memories will live on in my mind for longer than any photo.
We drov from here to a lovely hostel called Red Rocks near the Ugandan border run by a brother and sister who had been born in USA but returned to give something back to the country of their parents.
There were loads of community based activities to take part in such as cow milking, beekeeping, farm tour, basket weaving and banana beer making - all funds going to the community, the last two of which I took part in. The sisteer also run counselling sessions with local women to help them come to terms with the effects of the genocide and the AIDs they had contracted. Hunter and Lauren did the milking and gave the woman a $10 tip - which wouold be enough to feed her and her 2 children for a month....
We had a late start the next morning for Uganda.
