Arriving in Ushuaia was a bit of a culture shock after the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires. The flight in weaved through mountains before landing in a barren land. The drive to the town and the town itself really reenforced the name "The end of the world"
The town is very low rise with lots of corregated iron buildings - a real feel of a frontier land.
Arrived at the airbnb to be greeted by Monica - and her lack of English - time to start practicing. Shortly after arriving we headed off for food at Volver on her and the guests reccommendation - only to find it shut... Instead we went and joined the queue at El Viejo Marinero. Enormous king spider crabs kept on being brought out in front of us and we started to bond with the Irish couple in front of us in the queue. In fact we bonded so much that when the next table became available the restaurant assumed we were a four - we decided to go with it. Grace and David were twins - Grace travelling for a long time and David joining her for 5 weeks. We continued to chat over two crabs - lots of laughter and then decided to carry on to the Dublin bar - not very Irish but great craic.
After lots of drinks Helen and I called it a night/day and staggered home by 3am promising to meet up the next day!
The next day we booked a trip to Penguin Island for the next afternoon and went on a boat trip with the Tres Marias into the Beagle channel. Lots of birds, seal lions, seals and light house, a nice stroll on an island and an idiot German.
We met up with Grace David and Ben who they had met after we left last night at Volver. Now Volver means to return in Spanish but we had no intention as we were not impressed. We did have beaver carpaccio - double entendres the rest of the night off that one. Back to Dublin bar but an early night this time - only 2.15am!
Apparently we had made David's trip as we were the first fun he had come across - the rest of his trip had been very little craic - glad to oblige but it did worry us that the future would be a bit quiet. He was heading home the next day.
Off to the penguins the next day which was amazing - walked with Gentoos, Magallenics and King penguins after being driven over to the island by an Argentinian version of Nick Knowles - apparently my type! We also visited Estancia Haberton - the first farm in the area and now home to a small but decent sea mammal museum.
Last supper with Grace before she headed to the Antartic and we headed to Punta Arenas. Promised to keep in touch and had an early night - before midnight!
