I've fallen a bit behind on my blog, mostly due to the fact that we have been so busy having fun. So, here I am, trying to catch up as we are hiding from the afternoon sun in Sorrento. The last time I wrote we had just arrived in Florence and were thoroughly enjoying the sights there. We had two more full days to enjoy Florence. We spent the first day just sightseeing the city. Florence really has a great vibe to it, more sophisticated than Venice and more relaxed than Milan. Just walking the streets you can understand why so many of the great writers and artists chose to make Florence their home.
We started our day by heading to Florence's Duomo. The line up to get in was insane, so weopted not to go inside. We walked around the impressive building to check out the incredible architecture….Matt of course was taking photos. That's when we encountered our first gypsies. All around the Duomo there were these gypsies dressed in white nun habits with their faces painted completely white. They carried and handful of fake flowers and would come right up to you and make this freaky kissing sound while waving the flowers in your face. Of course they wanted money, but I can't understand why anyone would give it to them. I thought Matt was going to punch one when he was startled by one while he was trying to take photos. We spent the morning enjoying the small museum that is behind theDuomo, which housed some interesting Medieval and Rennaissance art from the church, as well as Michelangelo's 'Pieta'.We spent the afternoon trying to cope with the intense heat in Florence. We caught a local bus up to an indredible lookout point called Michelangelo's piazza. From here, you could look out over the whole city of Florence and see the beautiful Tuscan hills in the distance. The pictures say it all!
That evening Matt again found us a great restaurant using his incredible navigation skills and the recommendations from our guidebook. I don't think you can really go wrong with Italian food….especially in Tuscany!
