Kalbarri - a wonderful little seaside town with such a diverse landscape surrounding it! Majestic cliffs with some tragic historical accounts of shipwrecks, picturesque beaches, fishing and of course, the amazing Kalbarri National Park. We've only spent a couple of days here but have enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the town - still reasonably busy due to the school holidays.
Due to the recent cyclone up north, the Murchison River, which runs through the national park, forming a beautiful bay in the township before running out to sea is now fast flowing and very brown. Apparently the little bay is usually clear blue for snorkelling, but now totally brown with sediment. Still hasn't deterred anyone from swimming and water sports though - although snorkelling would be difficult!!
We spent a day at the national park walking about 10km in total - not used to this, so came home feeling very washed out! The walks were great! Of course, 'Nature's Window' is everybody's destination and it was very picturesque with amazing views. We walked across the cliff top and then down to the sandy river bed, fighting off the 'zillions' of flies until we had to succumb to wearing a fly net!!!
Next we did the 'Z-Bend' walk down through a gorge, climbing over rocks and down ladders to reach the river - spectacular. The river was a raging, brown torrent and apparently normally quiet waters where you can rock-hop and have a dip. Not today!! The day was also a quite cloudy so not as hot which was probably in our favour. Loved it!

Helen We really enjoyed our time in Kalbarri. Did you see any thorny devils? You are going to miss the wild flowers.
