Back on the coast again with nothing between us and the South Pole! You can tell by the cool wind that's constantly blowing, which is what we arrived to in Esperance. We ended up staying the weekend in a caravan park as, unbeknown to us it was a long weekend in WA and the national park campsites were supposedly full (you can't book ahead). It was nice to explore this quaint seaside town and we attended the local church there on Sunday as well. Alf also cooked up the fish we had been given at Baird Bay in a beer batter - yum!
The beaches here are amazing - fine, white sand with clear, turquoise water - the cleanest water I've ever seen. A couple of their beaches have been voted the best in Australia! I can see why. So, after a cool weekend, we headed off to try our 'luck' at Lucky Bay in the Cape Le Grand National Park. It turned out that there were quite a few sites available over the weekend after all!
We ended up staying in this beautiful place for a few days, exploring the beaches and walking tracks, enjoying the tame kangaroos which wandered through the camp and on the beach, and ended up climbing up the steep mountain, Frenchman's Peak. This was a real challenge as it was steeper than I imagined and my fear of heights got the better of me, so I managed to reach about 10m from the top, although Alf courageously made it to the peak! Wonderful!
