A brief stopover in Carnarvon enabled us to leave the van for the day and explore the coast just north from Quobba Point to Gnaraloo Station. The Quobba blowholes weren't 'blowing' as the seas were quite calm, but this area has claimed a few lives of people fishing off the rocks - they even have a huge sign as you drive in saying 'King Waves Kill'! There are a few remote camping locations at Red Bluff and the Quobba & Gnaraloo Stations. We had a quick swim at Red Bluff as it was so beautiful, however, the flies were relentless so we had to have our coffee and lunch in the car :(
The Carnarvon township has remnants evident of the recent cyclone and was understandably looking a bit 'shabby'. It's known as the 'fruitbowl' of this region, however most of the crops have been wiped out by the cyclone so most of the farms on the 'fruit loop' were closed.
They also have a 'One Mile' historical jetty and a huge satellite dish which was used by NASA to relay data for the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969 and tracking Halley's Comet. It closed in 1987.
