Before we embarked on the 'official' Oodnadatta track, we hsd a stopover at Dalhousie Springs on the edge of the Simpson Desert. It was so lovely to soak in the warm (37 degrees) water when the weather was quite cool, as well as an early morning dip before setting off on the road again.
The Oodnadatta track follows the Old Ghan Railway line and therefore it has ruins of old railway sidings which are really interesting historical remnants of the past. You can also see the pattern of the railway line even though the rail and most of the sleepers have been removed. For Alf, having been a train driver in his early days, this has been a really interesting drive.
Of course, the famous Pink Roadhouse at Oodnadatta was a must see (although you can't miss it in the main street!) and lots of iconic old car relics and rail memorabilia! A great drive!
We had an overnight camp at Algebuckina Bridge and waterhole with a couple of families we'd met at Dalhousie Springs. A great time to share a campfire and travel stories.
The next day we headed to William Creek, however, shortly after our arrival at around lunchtime, they closed the road south to Marree due to a rain front heading our way. We found that the Birdsville & Strzelecki Tracks were also closed. Our only alternative was to drive west to Coober Pedy.
