On arrival in Koh Phi Phi, the first thing that hits you as a traveller is how expensive it is! After being used to everything being cheap as chips you arrive and immediately have to pay a fee to be at the island then we got led away by agents to book a hotel, the cheapest being around £20 a night! The island itself has no cars on it and is all narrow streets and pretty beaches, its still extremely beautiful despite the masses of tourists and the whole of Koh Phi Phi town just being geared for tourists eg English food, tours and trips and bars/clubs. On our second day we booked a boat trip to go and see the islands around Koh Phi Phi and Maya Beach where the Leo DiCaprio film 'The Beach' was filmed. The trip was certainly not what I expected, it was probably one of the most scary days of my life and looking back on it now is hilarious. We were in a longtail boat being smashed about by intense waves, water covering the boat and we were left unable to see anything! When we arrived at Maya Beach (which again you have to pay to see) we didnt just get dropped off at the beach as expected- we had to get through an assault course first! We had to jump in to the sea from the boat with waves crashing against the huge rocks next to us and swim to a rope hanging from a huge rock we had to climb up to get us over to the beach. The return was even worse, having to go through a narrow tunnel holding on to rope with the heavy current trying its hardest to knock you over and then let go and swim hoping the water didnt pull you back. It did pull me back once but I escaped with only a cut on my foot, many others round Koh Phi Phi were limping and had bandages on their legs. It was a crazy day! That night we enjoyed some live music in a bar and then went to a beach party which was so so good for our final night out! We had a fantastic time on this island and liked it so much more than Koh Samui, I would definitely return! The next day we travelled to Phuket and got a flight back to Bangkok. We treated ourself to a lovely hotel for our last night and spent a last day in Bangkok at the zoo, in Chinatown and round the Grand Palace area. Our flight was at 2:40am and we have now arrived home after the best month ever! South East Asia we will definitely be returning x
