Last day.
We can't believe that today will be our last day. In some ways because we have seen so much it feels like we have been away for 4 weeks and then in other ways it really doesn't seem that long. I think it will take a lot of recounting to others and ourselves to fully appreciate and remember everything we've seen and done.
We spent the morning looking at windmills! Wherever we have visited it seems as if the main attractions or squares have either been covered up with scaffolding or covers due to them being renovated or having hundreds of tiered seating getting ready for performances that we never see or in today's case a working windmill which couldn't work because it was too WINDY!!!!!!!
Two of the windmills were open to the public. One was a restored windmill from 17th century and the other had been built in the 1990's to be working but during the build something was done incorrectly and the windmill won't work! Colin and the man joked about modern technology versus 17th century knowledge! They then went on to have a 20 minute conversation about our BMW!
We did enjoy the fact that once again out of the thousands of visitors in Brugge, only Colin and I were looking at the windmills and walking along the canal tour!
The weather has given us a mixed bag of showers and sunshine; getting us ready for home!
We sat having some lunch in a small square, when we noticed that almost every-one around us was eating chips. we thought it a little odd but as we left the square and walked past the 'Museum of Chips' all made sense.
A few years ago Colin and I watched a film called '24 hours in Brugge' which included one of the main characters shouting at a very overweight American man that he would die if he tried to climb the steps of the most famous tower in Belgium. Colin debated long and hard whether to enact this scene as we ourselves stood looking at the large crowds of tourists milling around the bottom of the steps!
We decided against queueing to climb the tower and went instead into the town hall with its highly decorated rooms it reminded me of the toen hall in Rochdale.
When we started our tour we were amongst a very small number of tourists but as we left the place was heaving as a coach load of Americans poured in; we beat a hasty retreat back to the hotel to change for the last time and go to the ferry.
About 5 mins from the ferry it began to rain and we spent an hour waitin gon the ockside getting soaked- ironic after 5 weeks of dry weather!
