I flew in to Perth morning and made great use of my 5 hour flight by eating all the chocolate I wasn't allowed to bring into the country which I had picked up from various freebies in Changi airport and to drown the sorrows of not being able to buy the incredibly cheap Hendricks Gin at the duty free because you have to order it >1h15m before your flight to either Oz or USA. I also wrote a letter home and watched my new favourite film The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Frances I thought of you because it is our kind of film and Rachel I thought of you because it was better than Taken 2. And there was a lot less death.

• The sight of Perth is breathtaking, especially from the couch surfing flat that I am staying in...
• Allan the host is crazy, sarcastic and so kind, feeling well at home...
• I went for a jog (to burn the chocolate) and on the way back heard deafening bangs from an unknown firework display which was more fantastic than any I have seen before...
• Warm but not wet...
Food: Allan cooled us battered fish, chips and kalimari. We also had some birthday cake since it was Marten's (pronounced in an Estonian way) birthday on Tuesday. It is coffee flavoured with a custard layer, very lush. I have noticed the muesli abroad is much better than the British stuff. I did some planning for my time in Oz but it will be dramatically shortened because it is so expensive here and I don't plan to work here, though I may WOOF in NZ where there is a cooler climate... But that's a decision for another day.
