Today we set off to explore KL - after a much needed cooked breakfast! Last night we made it to the adventurous choice of eatery: Nandos!
Today, we successfully found the tube station and hopped on a train to the centre of town. After about 5 seconds outside of the air-con of the station we were sweltering and set off walking to the visitors centre as we needed a computer printer again. As it turned out we walked in the complete opposite direction, so after a short while we decided we'd gone wrong and hopped on a city tour bus - partly to get out of the heat and mainly to get away from the smell! No offence intended to KL but most of the places we've been so far in this city on the streets stink! Anyway, the tour took over two hours and didn't really seem to cover much except traffic-filled roads! We did see the main sites in the city - the Petronas twin towers, the KL tower, the National Palace and Botanical gardens. We got off eventually and headed for lunch at the grand opening of a new McDonald's! Again always taking risks with our food - we have decided to definitely make more of an effort with the local food on Thailand! But the golden arches of McDonald's are on every single street and we just need some homely food...
After dinner, we set out in our search again to find the tourist centre or Internet cafe to online checkin for some flights. The humidity doesn't seem so severe in the afternoons so was more bearable for us to take a walk. We found the centre, did what we needed to, then headed back towards the Petronas towers for a photo session. These were the tallest towers in the world from 1998 to 2004 and are now the tallest twin towers in the world. Therefore, due to their height, to get the full buildings in on one picture, the area in front of the towers is full of tourists crouching, sitting and lying on the floor to get their snaps! Then if people aren't doing this, they're posing for a picture, so plenty of people-watching was done here! Next we headed into the shopping centre in Petronas. The shopping centres are massive, and unlike the Trafford Centre or Meadowhall at home where we have to travel a little way to get to a centre that big, here and in Singapore there's five on every street!
It was late when we returned to the hostel but we were exposed to another tropical rain storm, impressive maybe, but equally impressively annoying. At least we're getting some wear out of the cagoules!
Tomorrow morning we are taking a flight up to Krabi - one of the islands in the south of Thailand.
On the whole, although many of the streets in KL had a bit of a pong, the sites they have are impressive. In my opinion, KL has more character than Singapore as it is seems more of a 'normal' town with tramps on the street, rubbish about and people rushing to work between the very varied streets and buildings. Singapore on the other hand had more sights and things to do within the city but was unusually clean- which was lovely, yet there were so many restrictions on behaviour it seemed a little over the top!
However, I think lf you had more time here, some of the sights outside the city could be seen like the Batu caves. Also, I think Malaysia has a lot more to offer and with more time I would have like to have gone to Penang and the historical town of Melaka.
Singapore was a lovely clean city with a dive of a hostel, and KL has appeared as a dirtier city with a nice hostel. Hopefully the next place will be a nice combination of both!
