Today started by waking up in a hammock in the middle of the Amazon rainforest listening a black monkey (howling monkey) bellowing as loud as he could to mark his territory. We can think of worse places to wake up.
After all of us finally rolling out of our hammocks we re-lit the fire and cooked coffee which had a burning stick put out in it before hand for some reason but didn't make it taste bad surprisingly. Accompanied by more pineapple and bread we packed up the site and headed off in the boat.
We then went to visit an indigenous family living in the forest which showed how to make the local foods as well as tasting some of the natural fruits, of which we can name none. There was also a pineapple plantation which seemed to make one ripe pineapple a year by the looks of it and when they grow in their prickled surroundings it is hardly a surprise.
After Abigail had her hair played with by the locals who were fascinated by the colour, we headed back to the camp stopping to watch a couple of pink dolphins chase each other through the water. We ended up swimming in the Amazon amongst the piranha's, snakes and crocodiles (although none were visible) where the water was quite warm but the current was rather strong. After speaking to a couple of the lads they have settled our nerves about Salvador seeming to only here good things from them and others in the group.
After having lunch, our journey home seemed to take twice as long as the way there, having to take two boats, a camper van and a taxi during rush hour all in the sweltering heat wasn't fun. Thankfully when we arrived back at the hostel we found we had been upgraded so we had air conditioning and in general a much nicer room than before. For dinner we headed into the main square where there seemed to be a lot more tourists, and so far on reflection we have really enjoyed our time in Manaus. With steak, egg and chips it is hard to complain but Abigail did have a caiprinha which tasted like large version a tequila shot which didn't go down quite as well.
To conclude our night we ended trying to count Abigail's mosquito bites but there were too many so smothered her in toothpaste to stop the itching before going to bed.
