Today is my last day of this crazy epic worldwind tour of Europe. And it sure went out with a bang today. I did a 4 hour + walking tour of Red Berlin, which covered practically all of East Berlin. When that was over, I fought the intense urge to go back to my hostel and sleep for 10 hours and went to a beer garden. I had a big sausage and beer. Wait, WHAT? Hahaha. No, I ate rigattoni with fresh veggies and a really interesting banana wheat beer. Apparently that's the French influence from a few hundred years ago.
It's been a rather stressful time since I last wrote. That DAY I had my purse stolen in a bar that I went to with my tour group for La Tomatina. Everyone keeps saying, "wow, you need to be more careful!" but the thing is that I was super paranoid going back to Spain and it is just really difficult to be on guard all the time. So my guard was down for five minutes and off it went. The sad thing is that this time they got everything: my passport (thankfully I also have a UK one), my camera (with seven weeks worth of pictures), my iPod, our train pass and tickets (mine and Mo's), etc. Losing it all really really sucked. But the most heartbreaking was the camera. I still can't really process it. Thankfully Mo has pictures...but it's just not the same, you know?
The next morning (four short hours later) was La Tomatina. I was not in the right head space as you can imagine, and it was unfortunately more scary than fun. Don't get me wrong, the tomato fight itself was really fun. But the crowds were insane and people were whipping knotted wet t-shirts around before the tomatoes came out...in an effort to speed it up? And afterwards I really felt like I was going to be trampled to death. Literally. I have never been so scared of that before. So I can say that I'm happy that that's now out of my system and I will never do it again. I'm also really thankful that I was not turned off tomatoes for good. Although the thought of the smell still makes me want to gag.
Since Valencia I've been to Barcelona, Paris, London and Cambridge, all places I'd been to before on this trip. It was nice to revisit them. Especially nice was the revisit to Cambridge where I just got to chill out in bed in front of the TV, except when we went out for fantastic dinners.
Berlin has been the last hoorah. I haven't been all that wowed by it as I expected to be. It just seemed to be this really sprawled out city. Is there a downtown that I'm somehow missing? Where are all the people? Turns out the people only come out during the week. Today I got a much better idea. It's definitely not my favourite place on the trip (I have seen many, many amazing places), but I definitely appreciate how incredible this place is.
I still can't believe tomorrow is the end. Day 97. It's been well worth it all. I wouldn't trade any of it. Except for maybe the double Spanish thefts.
