Lazy day. It's quite hot today, >30°. Went for a ride, watched the sunset again. Main water pipe burst so no water for half the day. Jasper attempted to ride his bike across a muddy stream across the esplanade track that runs from Karumba to Karumba Point and got stuck and covered in mud. Then Amanda found a sign that gave actual examples of people taken by crocs and a severe warning to pleeease stay out of the water. Mild panic again.
It's hot here during the day, over 30° today, but cool at night. The sunrise isn't until nearly 7am but the sunset is about 6:15pm. The days are also longer than in Brisbane for this time of year.
The caravan park is huge and almost full. There are 4 c'parks in town and the population is >90% grey nomads. Some of them are very interesting. My neighbour is from Geelong and has been here for 14 weeks. He's a very keen fisherman and was happy to tell me the what and wherefore about the different types. Another lady has come here every year since 1964 from Melbourne! Her husband was injured in the war and couldn't stand the cold winters any more so they started travelling around Australia in 1961, discovering Karumba in '64 and loved it. The effect of the grey nomads is everywhere. There is a pharmacy here and they stock everything an over-65 could need but not much for the average teenager. Despite the remoteness of the place, the prices for things are actually okay, even cheap for fish and chips. I think the reason is likely that the GN's won't pay if things are expensive. The amount of money they have spent on their gear is tremendously variable but generally modest. Some guys are driving Chev Silveradoes with enormous expanding fifth wheelers. Plenty have the V8 VX Cruiser with roof-top boat carrier. But most have more modest set ups.
Amanda made an excellent roast pork with veg on the mini Webber. C and J fed the kites left over pork (we thought they were Wedge-tailed eagles at the time). In no time at all, there were at least 50 of them circling and swooping to catch the pieces before they hit the ground. It was amazing, and a little scary after a while.
