Nungwi beach today…VERY excited!!! This is supposed to be a highlight of the whole tour, blinding white sands, crystal blue waters teeming with tropical fish and nothing to do but relax and enjoy it for 2 whole days!!!
The drive north was really pretty. We passed all sorts of little villages and it was very tropical and jungle like. It was only about 2 hours and it seemed like we had barely begun when we started getting glimpses of what was ahead. For some reason the sea is even more perfect here and there are miles and miles of pristine beaches long before we arrive at our destination.
The resort itself is very beautiful although clearly one of the cheaper ones in the area. I guess it fits in with our budget. On first glimpse it looks really nice but the closer you look the more you see signs of decay and the need for a refurb. I found out later today that the owner has only recently bought the place and is doing survey's on customer expectations so that he can refurbish the place. That probably means it'll be more expensive and Nomad will have to find somewhere else to use in future which is a shame because the location is truly beautiful.
First things first we needed some lunch as everyone was feeling a bit peckish! Where's Vincent when you need him? Mandla led us on a tour through the local village, away from the touristy resorts, where he knows a great little restaurant selling local food at exceptionally cheap prices. Everyone tucked in except for me as the food was hot and I was so hot myself I only really wanted a salad. The portions are also huge and I just couldn't imagine eating so much food!
After lunch I headed off into the sea with Stefan and Roen who are both much more accomplished swimmers than me and both went off into really deep water looking for underwater creatures while I splashed around in the shallows with some others from the group. They came back with a big starfish for me which was really cool. We then had to give it back to some locals with a boat so they could drop it in deeper water where it was found. Stefan is an accomplished diver and has no trouble diving down to great depths without any equipment!
For dinner we went to a local bar but there was a big group of us and it took forever for our food to arrive, nearly 2 hours!!! I wasn't hungry anymore by the time it was set in front of me. Time for bed!
