Travel day began frantically as we were racing around to clean up all our clothes from the washing the night before and repack our bags for the long voyage into the south of France. Eventually we were all boarded on the bus and were introduced to our guide for this leg, Timothy. He then introduced us to our driver Gordon or as he refered to him, Flash Gordon.
Aparantly Timothy is a nature nazi meaning that he wouldn't put on any entertainment for us until we looked at some of the nature that we were going past. After crossing some beautiful mountains which made Laura feel ill he agreed to put on the movie which was supposed to be Casino Royale as we were heading for Monte Carlo-ish territory. He however had lost the disc.
Instead we watched School of Rock which we both enjoyed quite a bit. Half way through the movie we also enjoyed our first service stop at a road side restaraunt known as Marche's. At Marche's we had a ham and salad breadroll and some fresh juice which was just delicious.
We later crossed the Swiss border which again it was possible they would pull the bus over, however they didn't. From Switzerland we actually crossed into Italy and drove for quite some time in Italy passing towns such as Torino, Genoa and Milan from those that I can remember. We had a late afternoon stop in a Service Station in Torino and bought the biggest Cornetto's I have ever seen. It was 42 degrees and you could feel it.
After 197 tunnels (no kidding) we were onto the French Riviera and soon to pass above Monaco. We were told all about the history of Monaco, its royal family and the region. We later passed Princess Stephanies rock where they have actually closed off the actual road where she drove off the mountain on that fateful day.
We eventually pulled up in Nice. We arrived at our Hotel (2 Star) and found out that Laura and I would be the 2 stars. It had a kitchen and the room had air con but the pots had no handles and the room only one window which was on the back of the door.
We went for a quick wander to get aquainted with the area and then went back to get changed as all the people off the bus were going out to an Irish Pub for dinner. After walking for about 2 kms we got to the pub where the meals were quite nice. Laura had an entree of a Melon Cocktail, main of Herbed Chicken with fries and salad and dessert of a Pudding with Brandy Sauce. I had a warm goats cheese salad as my entree, the chicken as my main and a chocolate mousse for dessert.
During dinner we watched the highlights of the opening ceremony of the Olympics and exchanged words with people from other countries as to the clothinig warn by the athletes. We later walked home with some friends from the night and had to get some sleep for our cruise to St. Tropez tomorrow....
