So I finally made it to South Africa. After a 14hour flight I was whisked through the city-(it's huge!) to my hostel. JoBerg is actually quite nice and seems safe-easy to walk around during daylight hours, but not so sure how it works at nighttime. I got an early night in readyness for my trip to Zimbabwe.
After coming back from Moz, I spent one more day in JoBerg...why? To see the apartied museum of course! It was very thought provoking from the start-when we were given white or black ID cards to enter. There was so much information to take in; telling us about how the Africans, the Brtish and the Boers fought amongst themselves to make the union of South Africa in the 1800's...all the way through to the forming of the ANC and the fighting between the government and the various African parties to end apartied; what the whites thought would be a good way of making the country a better and stronger place. Images of Mandela and the Soweto uprising, inclduded alongside white Africaans housed in dirty, poor immigration camps gave quite a balanced view of what realy happened all those years ago.
