After our free breakfast, we leave our cottage and decide to stop by the Krossobanen for a ride up the mountain. It's not part of my original plan but now we have no plan so we take the tram up to the top and back. Completed in 1928, Krossobanen was the first cable car in Northern Europe and rises about 1600' above the valley. Lots of backpackers are on the way up with us looking to hike further into the mountains. It's raining pretty hard and the view up here, tempered by the fog, clouds and rain, is not the best but we take photos anyway.
Back down below, we set the GPS to our next destination, Eidjford. It's says it's about 3 1/2 hours but takes us much longer. The times given on the Google maps are nowhere near the correct time, only about half the needed time. They have us driving at 80kph all the way and that's not happening. Besides our own screw ups, there's campers and trailers everywhere. Lots of tunnels, roads where two cars cannot pass and our GPS going in and out. It's raining most of the time during our drive and there's snow in the distance. We find this beautiful waterfall right along side the road and stop for pictures. It's huge! Unfortunately, there's a gift shop conveniently located adjacently and Karen finds some "great deals". Moving on, we stop for gas, not that we need it, and find our B&B fairly easy since our ride was long but simple to follow.
For some reason, I'm not feeling well today. I'm tired, with a headache and cough. I just want to go to sleep but it's 6pm and we're here to see Voringfossen. In case you haven't figured it out yet, "fossen" is Norwegian for "waterfall" and there are plenty of "fossens" around here. It's up the road about 8 miles but what an 8 mile ride it is. The tunnels we go through are dark and one, probably a mile long, circles around inside the mountain like a corkscrew as we climb in altitude. We get to the falls parking area and follow some people to the end of the path. They're Norwegians and after some conversation among themselves, they leave. I think there must be more to this. We came a long way to see this stupid waterfall. Leaving Mom to sit on a rock, I climb through the underbrush and find an astonishing view of Voringsfossen. I'm standing on the edge of a vertical cliff, it's a bit unnerving. One wrong step and it's 3000' straight down. No fences, signs or guardrails like in the USA. I return to Karen, all excited about my find and, reluctantly, Mom follows me back. She's not liking this but it's a beautiful waterfall. She makes it within 5' of the edge and we document her accomplishment with photos and videos. Now let's get out of here. We drive farther up the road to the Fossli Hotel. The view from here is supposed to be great but no one, including me, feels like tackling another jaunt down the hill to see it. We head back to our B&B, winding our way back round and round through the tunnels. At least we don't need the GPS as we know where we're going.
We return to our room and then go down for dinner. Unless you want fish or pancakes, try the meatballs with beer and diet orange. Their meatballs, potatoes and vegetables were OK but nothing to write home about. It could have been served warmer. I struggle to eat all of it but my appetite is not all that. I just want to sleep. Back upstairs, I'm out like a light. There's WiFi but I don't care. Mom gives me an allergy pill and Ibuprofen. Maybe tomorrow will be better for me.
